The Five Levels
The Intensive English Language Program consists of five proficiency levels, starting at Level 2 (high beginner) to Level 6 (intermediate). When students first come to the University, they are given a Placement Test and then allocated to one of the five levels of the IELP (No students are allocated to Level 6 initially.) Each Level is an 8-week course, so students normally progress through the levels at a rate of 2 per semester. The route that students follow is therefore like this:

The routes above assume that a student progresses without repeating any given level. If a student must repeat a level, his or her route changes to the one listed immediately above it. For example, if a student starts in Route D but fails level Level 5 in FALL 1, he or she will become a Route C student in FALL 2.
