Introduction:

 This programme serves the students of the College of Education in the majors of Geography, History, Arabic Education, Islamic Education, Physical Education, and Arts Education. These majors are taught in the Arabic Medium and English is given to the students to enhance their English Language skills. The students of Education take two general English courses, namely English for Education I and English for Education II. The programme also offers one basic course for the Educational Administration students.

 General English for Education I (LANC1008)

About the course

This course offers fundamental grammatical structures providing ample opportunities for practice through varied classroom activities. Grammar and vocabulary are integrated in the teaching of the four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Additional reading is provided through graded readers.
 
Students:
This course is given to the students of Education with majors taught in the Arabic Medium. They have two general English courses running during their first and second semester. This course is a pre-requisite for the second course, LANC1009.
 
Course objectives:
On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
  • ·        Understand the main content of a medium basic piece of English, spoken at normal speed.
  • ·        Take part and be comprehensible in a pre- intermediate level English conversation.
  • ·        Understand and produce grammatical structures at a pre-intermediate level.
  • ·        Understand and produce some reasonably accurate examples of written English at a pre-intermediate level.
  • Develop some reading skills in extensive reading.
  • ·        Gain some grasp of basic study skills.

·        Headway Plus Pre-intermediate student book and course book, (Units 1-7)
·        Graded Readers
·        Supplementary materials provided by the teachers

General English for Education II (LANC1009)
 
About the course:
This course follows on from the first one and aims to build on the previous knowledge of grammar and vocabulary taking the students to a higher level of proficiency in the four language skills. While the course offers the students opportunities to practice all the four skills, speaking is more emphasized at this course. Students are given a chance to do a presentation on a topic of their choice with guidance from the teacher.
 
Students:  
Students must complete the first General English course (LANC1008) successfully in order to register for this course.
 
Objectives
On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
·        Understand the main content of a medium basic piece of English, spoken at normal speed.
·        Take part and be comprehensible in a pre- intermediate level English conversation.
·        Understand and produce grammatical structures at a pre-intermediate level.
·        Understand and produce some reasonably accurate examples of written English at a pre-intermediate level.

English for Educational Administration (LANC1007)
 
About the course:
This course is for 3 hours per week and it is worth 3 credits. Students have 2 lessons a week for one semester. (Approximately 16 weeks)
 The overall aim of this course is to help the students with the English that will be useful for them as they do their jobs as Principals/Assistant Principals in Oman schools.
 The course covers the four skills: Reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as helps students develop Fundamental English Grammar, Vocabulary and Self study skills.
  
Students:
The students are Head teachers from the schools in Oman who have been given the chance to join the University again to upgrade their qualifications.
 
Objectives:
On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
 
  • Produce and comprehend grammatical structures that are appropriate for their level.              
  • Understand short listening texts like a series of sentences, a conversation or spoken monologues with language appropriate for their level.
  • Read and comprehend written texts of varying lengths suitable for their level.
  •  Produce specific and directed pieces of writing such as letters, summaries, and texts about themselves, their schools, families and daily routines.
  • Recognize, differentiate, comprehend and produce lexical items at an appropriate level. 
  • Comprehend and participate in everyday conversations that might occur in the staff room, the classroom, or their office, at a suitable level of English.

·        Head Start beginner student book and workbook.
·        Graded Readers
·        Supplementary materials provided by the course teachers.
