The Science Credit Programme offers the English courses that Science, Science Education and Educational Technology students are required to take while pursuing their subject credit courses. The aim of the courses is to equip students with the English language and study skills they need to maximize their performance throughout their college studies.
English for Science I (LANC 2050) aims to equip students with the English language and study skills necessary for understanding scientific texts and lectures related to their subject areas. The course is anchored around scientific themes and contains a wide variety of activities aimed at fostering reading, writing, lexical and aural/oral skills. Insofar as is possible, authentic native-speaker materials and media are used in order to help students develop strategies to cope with the real context of their academic studies in English.
English for Science II (LANC 2051) is an integrated course for Science and Science Education students. It uses the research process as a vehicle for skills development and language acquisition. Reading selectively, note-taking, organising material into an outline and paraphrasing are given prominence in this topic-based course. Two central assignments, an oral presentation and the writing of a formal article, serve as a focus, and regular post-unit tests give students feed-back on their performance. The approach adopted by the course emphasizes good study habits and self-sufficiency, in the hope that students’ language proficiency will continue to develop after this, their last formal English language course.
English for Educational Technology 1 (LANC 2080) This first credit course is designed for College of Education students specialising in teaching and learning technology. It aims to introduce and reinforce the vocabulary and language of education (learning style theories, educational approaches) through reading and writing tasks, in addition to research and practical projects using the internet and educational media such as Moodle.
English for Educational Technology II (LANC 2081) goes one step further to improve and extend the English language skills of College of Education students specialising in teaching and learning technology. During the course the students are involved in various hands-on tasks using software to plan lessons and write teaching materials on Moodle. Throughout the course the students are encouraged to become familiar with the language of web-based educational materials in general and develop their own autonomous learning strategies. They will study from in-house materials and an up-to-date printed course book, Oxford English for Information Technology.
English Language Skills(LANC 6000) is designed to improve the language proficiency of graduate students at Master’s degree level, particularly in the reading and writing of English. Practical advice and practice is provided in academic research skills and independent study is encouraged.
All courses meet six hours a week during the fifteen-week semester. Maximum section size is 22. The number of sections varies depending on the semester. |
