The Tourism, Mass Media, Music and Musicology Credit Programmes are three different programmes that offer nine English courses.  While pursuing their subject credit courses in the College of Arts, our students are required to take the following English language credit courses as college requirements:

·        Three courses for English for tourism

·        Four courses for English for Mass Media

·        Two courses for English for Music and Musicology

The aim of these courses is to help students develop the essential English language and study skills that are needed to equip them with the confidence to communicate effectively in all areas of their fields.  The courses also aim to introduce and reinforce the vocabulary of Tourism, Mass Media and Musicology.

English for Tourism I 

The aim of this course is to help students develop the essential listening and speaking skills that are needed to equip them with the confidence to communicate effectively in all areas of the tourism industry. The focus of the course is listening and speaking, but students also learn to take notes, write outlines, design itineraries and discuss a variety of debatable topics. Tourism terminology is introduced in this course.
English for Tourism II 

This course focuses on all four skills but places a particular emphasis on developing students’ reading and writing skills. Students perform a range of tasks, including recognizing tourism terminology, locating and extracting details from texts and drawing conclusions from varied sources of information. They read a variety of texts from authentic tourism publications, extract relevant information and deliver a talk. They also design brochures, write reports and produce different types of formal letters. The emphasis is on the style and layout of commercial correspondence as well as on content and relevant areas of grammar and tourism terminology.
 
English for Tourism III
 
This advanced course places a strong emphasis on autonomous learning that involves independent research and analyzing data to achieve an outcome in the form of reports and multi-media materials. The course also focuses on reading, collecting information from multiple sources and using the information for specific purposes. In addition, the students continue to consolidate the tourism terminology they have previously been taught and to acquire new and extensive professional relevant terminology through listening to, reading and analyzing a variety of authentic texts. The online-based language learning activities consolidate the reading, vocabulary and grammar items of the course and emphasize autonomous learning skills.
 
English for Mass Media I 

The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the key concepts and the language skills required for communicative tasks related to print media. It covers the basic introduction to interviews,paraphrasing, summarizing and the language of the media. Students listen to, read and discuss headlines, news stories and short newspapers articles. They also produce oral reports, accurate paragraphs and are expected to complete a media-related project.
 
English for Mass Media II 

This is the second English Language credit course for students in the Department of Mass Communication (College of Arts).In this course, while language skills and vocabulary extension are practiced, the students are introduced to more communicative tasks and activities that are related to the field of study and required for producing oral reports, interviews, summaries, news stories, letters to the editor, argumentative essays and audio-visual projects. The productive skills are emphasized.

 
English for Mass Media III 

The aim of this course is to help students develop their skills of media literacy. Students learn that media texts are made up of signs. They examine two of the four main media codes: the code of still graphic images and the code of written Language. They also practise analyzing a range of still graphic images and written texts both orally and in writing. In addition students discuss various media related topics and produce projects using the two media codes: written language and still graphic images. 
 
English for Mass Media IV 

The aim of this course is to help equip Media students with the confidence to read all kinds of media texts. In the previous course, students explored and examined the code of still graphic images and the code of written Language.   In this course students examine two additional media codes: the code of sound and the code of moving images. They analyze the way sound signs are used in radio and moving texts. In addition, students continue to conduct interviews, discuss various media related issues and produce projects using the two media codes: sound and moving images.
English for Music & Musicology I 

English for Music & Musicology I is the first English language credit course for students in the Department of Music & Musicology, College of Arts. The aim of this course is to help students develop the English language skills necessary for their major through reading selected texts, extracting information from brief spoken texts, producing structured paragraphs, and communicating effectively in the classroom on music-related topics. In addition, students are introduced to music vocabulary and expected to complete a guided project.
English for Music & Musicology II (will be implemented fall semester 2009)

In this integrated skills course, students continue to consolidate the vocabulary they have been taught in English for Music & Musicology I and acquire new words related to music & musicology through music-related reading texts, listening tasks, written analyses of various musical styles, and speaking activities. In addition, students are required to produce a music-related project.
