The Department of Microbiology & Immunology plays a pivotal role in imparting exemplary teaching, state of art research and steadfast community service. It contributes substantially in teaching the premier M.D. as well as B.Sc. Biomedical Sciences and B.Sc. Nursing undergraduate programmes. In the MD programme, apart from didactic lectures, there are intensive small group interactive tutorials and practicals which enhance the students’ understanding of the subject as well as give an insight into the clinical correlation and applications of Microbiology and Immunology. The Department is involved in teaching the MD students in all three phases of the curriculum -phase 1, phase 2 and phase 3. The Department co-ordinates three MD courses- Response to Infection and Pathobiology, Hematopoietic and Immune system and Integrated Module 3, while a course each in in B.Sc. Biomedical Sciences (Parasitology) and in B.Sc. Nursing (Microbiology) undergraduate programmes. The Department offers a prestigious two-year Master’s programme in Biomedical Sciences (Medical Microbiology) as well as four-year research-based Ph.D. programmes in Bacteriology, Virology, Parasitology and Immunology. 

The Department’s dedicated and motivated clinical sections offer up-to-date diagnostic services to Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH) and other hospitals in Oman in the fields of bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology and immunology. The members contribute substantially to the antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control efforts of Sultan Qaboos University Hospital. 

The Clinical wing of the Department contributes substantially to the Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) residents’ teaching and training programmes of primarily students undergoing residency in Medical Microbiology and Dermatology programs. The Department is also involved in training biomedical scientists and medical doctors who are interested in short term attachments.  
The Department regularly reviews and updates the curricula in consultation with the Curriculum committee. The faculty are valuable members of several administrative and scientific committees. 
The Department has myriad research interests. In Microbiology current research is focused on molecular virology and bacteriology; antimicrobial resistance and synergy testing, neglected tropical diseases, emerging, vector-borne, zoonotic diseases and other parasitic infections; epidemiology of human papilloma virus, hepatitis A, cytomegalovirus etc.  Immunology research focuses on autoimmunity, immunity to hepatitis C virus infection and immunodeficiency, both primary and acquired, including HIV/AIDS. There is active international research cooperation between the faculty members of the Department and their counterparts in Austria, Canada, France, Germany, the UAE, the UK, the USA and India. The faculty members have been recipients of several grants which resulted in good robust research and publications. The faculty members have been recognized for their dedication to teaching and cutting edge research by several university awards. The Department boasts of several patents and many publications in the last 5 years which were published in acclaimed peer reviewed journals.
