Program Overview

 

This program equips students with the necessary skills in practical translation from and into English and Arabic and provides them with a broader intellectual perspective on the subject. It consists of two years of study: the first year leads to a Postgraduate Diploma; the second year to a Master’s Degree. Students who have excelled in the Diploma year will be eligible to proceed to the Master’s program.

 

Diploma Requirements

 

  • During one academic year (i.e. Semesters I and II), students must take five core courses plus two electives.
  • To graduate, 21 credits must be completed with a minimum CGPA of 2.75.

 

Master’s Requirements

  • Only students with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 in their Diploma courses will be allowed to proceed to the second year of the course of study.
  • Credits from the Diploma courses will be counted towards the Master's Degree provided that the minimum grade of C is obtained in the course (in accordance with SQU Postgraduate Regulations).
  • During one academic year (i.e. Semesters III and IV), students must take four core courses plus one elective (15 credits).
  • Over the two-year course of study, a total of 36 credits must be completed with a minimum CGPA of 3.00.
  • A comprehensive examination must be passed at the end of the coursework in order to graduate. The comprehensive examination will be conducted as specified in the SQU Postgraduate Regulations.

 

Admission Requirements

 

 

  • Applicants must be Arabic speakers with a BA or BEd degree in English. Those with other English-medium Bachelor's degrees may apply provided they demonstrate the necessary linguistic proficiency in both TOEFL/IELTS tests and a translation test administered by the Department. Those with the requisite language proficiency but no, or insufficient, background in linguistics will be able to join the program directly but will have to pass a bridging course (TRAN6001). Here is a summary of admission requirements:
  • a Bachelor's degree in any English-medium specialization with a CGPA of 2.50 minimum (or equivalent);
  • English Proficiency Test Certificate band (6.5) or higher in academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic or a score of (89) or higher in the International TOEFL – IBT
  • a pass in a translation test (English-Arabic; Arabic–English), designed to assess candidates' proficiency in Arabic as well as their aptitude in translation

English Proficiency

 

  • Before starting the program, the admitted candidates should submit an English Proficiency Test Certificate band (6.5) or higher in academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic or a score of (89) or higher in the International TOEFL – IBT.

 

  • English Certificate must be submitted before the translation test.

 

  • N.B. Institutional TOEFL test is not acceptable.

There will be an admission test for all the applicants and those who pass the exam shall be called for an interview
