Critical Thinking and Analytical Writing

 

Overview


This is a comprehensive program consisting of 2 workshops that will cover “Analyze an Issue" and "Analyze an Argument" analytical writing tasks relevant to academic environment and postgraduate research. It will give you the tools to improve your critical thinking skills and the ability to articulate and evaluate complex arguments and discussions.

 

Outcome of the student after completion of the workshop

Develop the conceptual understanding of critical thinking and analytical writing patterns and paradigms Identify skills and qualities necessary for effective analytical writing with an emphasis on the analysis of an issue and an argument Consolidate conceptual and practical knowledge of (a) how to respond to the issue while constructing an argument with reasons and examples to support your views; (b) how to evaluate the logical soundness of an argument. Practice evaluating the issue and developing a reasoned argument with examples to support personal views.

Writing a Manuscript for a Scientific Journal: Practical Aspects and Critical Thinking

 

Overview

 

This workshop aims to make participants acquire the principles of writing a sound scientific research manuscript to be published in a good scientific journal. The workshop will involve theoretical aspects (lectures) that clearly illustrate what must be done and what should not be done when writing a scientific manuscript. All aspects of paper writing as well as what the editors and reviewers are expecting from the writers will be covered. Most of the workshop time will be allocated for practical aspects of writing a manuscript. Each participant is expected to bring his own data and will be helped to draft a suitable manuscript.

  • To understand how to write a sound scientific manuscript.
  • To know what must be done and what should be avoided when writing a manuscript.

The aim of this workshop is to provide participants the skills needed to search through general and specialized online databases that the library subscribes to, the workshop will be discussing and/or demonstrating:

• The principles of online searching.

• Boolean operators and search techniques.

• Evaluate search results.

• Creating folders and setting up alerts. 

• Exporting citations to reference management software.  

 

Outcome of the student after completion of the workshop

By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:

  • Develop search terms that retrieve relevant search results.

  • Find articles and other resources on a topic by using SQU Single Search or by searching a selected database.

  • Apply advanced search techniques and be able to evaluate search results.

  • Identify the elements required to create a citation.

Thesis Writing

 

Overview

This conceptual and practical workshop aims at introducing the audience to writing and structuring a thesis (dissertation). The participants will be introduced to such aspects of thesis writing as phases, types and modes of writing; types of thesis, expectations and requirements of thesis, academic writing, reviewing the literature and writing the literature review, writing about the research methodology and research design, presenting results and writing the discussion, introduction, acknowledgements, abstract and appendices. Past thesis will be examined and contexts of the participants’ own research will be considered.

Overview

Statistical tools plays a key role in writing research papers in various academic disciplines. This workshop intends to familiarize participants with frequently used statistical tools such as T-Tests, ANOVA, Correlation and Regression with the help of some case studies. SPSS will be used to analyze data.
