Program Overview

 

The PhD program in ELT at SQU aims to prepare specialists, researchers, teacher educators and other related professionals who can respond to current educational issues posed at both the international scene and the local Omani environment. The program also aims to provide students with experience, knowledge and skills required to pursue careers in academia or educational leadership and to develop students’ research skills through conducting research and participating in college and collaborative research teams, seminars, workshops, expert panels, on-line discussion groups, and local, regional, and international conferences.

 

Admission Requirements

 
  • Applicants should have a Bachelor degree in ELT from Sultan Qaboos University or another recognized university.
  • The applicants should have a master's degree in ELT or an equivalent degree, either from Sultan Qaboos University, or from any other recognized university in the specialization. 
  • A Cumulative Grade Point Average of not less than 3.00 on a 4-point scale or equivalent in any other system and the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies will make the assessment for equivalency acceptance.
  • Applicants with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) between 2.75 and 2.99 on a 4.0-point scale may be considered for admission subject to a minimum of two years of work experience after MA/M. Ed.
  • The applicant must be a full time student for 4 years.
  • Providing a mini proposal including suggested title, problem statement, aims, significance and justifications, and the proposed methodology.  
  • The applicant should submit a CV and evidence of published academic work
  • Two letters of reference from academics, to show competence in the discipline of interest and research capabilities.
  • The applicant must submit a release letter or a study leave from employer, addressed to the dean of the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies at SQU. Unemployed applicants need to submit a statement from The Ministry of Labour documenting the unemployment status of the applicant.  
  • A minimum of two years experience in ELT is required and one-year experience after MA/M. Ed.

 

English Proficiency

 

  • Submitting band (6.5) or higher in academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic or a score of (90) or higher in the International TOEFL – IBT

or 

  • Submitting band (6.0) in the academic IELTS test or (79) in the international TOEFL test, provided that they register for the language course LANC6001(after being admitted) during the first semester. 
     

or

  • Submitting band (5.5) in the academic IELTS test or (69) in the international TOEFL test, provided that they register for the two language courses LANC6001 and LANC6003 (after being admitted) during the first semester. 

Selection Criteria

 
  • There will be an admission exam for all applicants.
  • The best achieving applicants in the written exam will be called for interview to determine their suitability for the PhD program in ELT based on their academic records, research interests, and future objectives.
