Introduction to the Orientation Program for Medical Interns

Welcome to the Orientation Program for Medical Interns at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, designed to effectively bridge your transition from academic learning to clinical practice. Our program aims to prepare you for the challenges and responsibilities of your medical internship and the postgraduate training under the Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB).

Main Aims and Objectives

1. Acquaintance with Roles and Responsibilities: Understand the detailed job description and career counseling, highlighting your roles and responsibilities during the medical internship program.

2. Professionalism and Medical Ethics: Learn about the essential aspects of professionalism and medical ethics crucial for your daily practice.

3. Clinical Documentation: Gain insights into preparing discharge summaries and other clinical documentation.

4. Specialized Talks and Career Guidance: Benefit from special talks by fellow interns and senior consultants on topics like organ donation, transplantation, and the medicolegal system in Oman.

5. Introduction to Professional Bodies: Learn about the Oman Medical Association (OMA) and the general overview of the OMSB and General Foundation Program (GFP).

 

Important Information Before Starting the Internship

- Program Schedule: The orientation program will be held before the start of the internship year (August each year) at the Medical Lecture Theatre, College of Medicine and Health Sciences

- Attendance is mandatory for all interns.

Interactive Sessions: Prepare for interactive sessions with experienced professionals who will guide you through the essentials of your internship.

Resource Availability: Take this opportunity to ask questions and gather resources that will aid your learning and professional growth.

- Professional Conduct: Adhere to the guidelines of professional conduct and ethics as you step into your new role.

 

Preparing for Postgraduate Training in OMSB

The orientation program will also cover an overview of the OMSB and GFP, providing you with the foundational knowledge needed for your postgraduate training. You will learn about the expectations, opportunities, and resources available to support your ongoing professional development.

 

By the end of the orientation program, you will have a clear understanding of the practical and ethical standards required in clinical settings, ensuring you are well-prepared to embark on your internship with confidence.

 

Introduction: 
Internship, is a junior medical doctor's first position undertaken as an initial step at the beginning of a medical career as a physician after obtaining the MD and is compulsory regardless of whatever specialty of medicine will eventually be pursued in the future.  

The Internship year is a period of general medical training, building upon the skills that have been acquired at medical school, and learning how they are applied whilst taking increasing but guided responsibilities for patient care and management.

Internship Training Program is divided into 3 period of 4-months in Medicine, Surgery, Child Health or Obstetrics and Gynecology. During the 1-year training, interns are expected to do 2 rotations in major hospitals which are SQUH and Royal Hospital and 1 peripheral rotation (optional) in an affiliated hospital.

Internship Program Admission Guidelines for Omani Applicants

 

 

 Eligibility Criteria:

An individual is eligible to apply for the Internship Program if they hold an MD/MBBS degree from an Omani or internationally accredited university, granted within the last four years from the date of graduation.

 

The Admission Requirement:

  1.  Applicants must have graduated within the last four years. Graduates who have completed more than 12 months since their graduation date will experience a delay in joining the internship program.

 

  1. The applicant should fill out the International Graduates Application Form which can be found in the Important Forms section. This form should be returned to the office through medinterns@squ.edu.om along with the documents below.

 

  1. To provide the Internship Office with the following documents:
  2. CV                                                                  
  3. Copy of MD certificate
  4. Certificate of qualification equivalency (Ministry of Higher Education, Oman) for graduates from international universities
  5. Transcript of academic records
  6. Copy of passport / National ID
  7. Photographs (passport size) – soft copy and  4 hard copies
  8. Vaccination record as per SQUH policy
  9. Medical check up report
  10. OMSB Data Flow Applicant Kit: https://ccp3.dfgateway.com/cm/ (Validation of Certificates)
  11. For non-English speaking universities: IELTS exam/equivalent of 6.0 and above

 

4. The applicant must meet the registration and training requirements, including passing the personal interview, in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Internship Training Program.

Introduction:

The internship training year is the first position medical graduates undertake as junior medical physicians. Acquiring the required skills, attitude, and professional behavior is compulsory to consolidate medical knowledge and deliver safe patient care. It is a structured training through which the interns are supervised and assessed against preset core competencies. During the internship training, interns are expected to act as active learners and deliver service efficiently through outstanding patient care. The interns are exposed to various clinical and non-clinical scenarios by rotating in different specialties. During the internship year, the interns explore their passion, choose their career path, and plan and apply for residency training or other postgraduate opportunities.

 

 

Internship Program Admission Guidelines for Non-Omani Applicants

International Medical Graduates

 

 Eligibility Criteria:

A person shall be eligible to apply for the Internship Program if they are a graduate (within a maximum of one year from the date of graduation) with an MD/MBBS degree from an Internationally Accredited University.

 

The Admission Requirement:

1. The applicant must have recently graduated, with no more than one year (12 months) since graduation (1st August 2024 – 31st July 2025).

2. The applicant should apply by filling in the Google Application Form

3. To provide the Internship Office with the following documents:

  • Updated and detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Copy of Medical Degree Certificate (MD Certificate).
  • Certificate of Qualification Equivalency and Recognition – Issued by the Ministry of Higher Education, Sultanate of Oman.
  • Academic Transcript.
  • Copy of passport / National ID.
  • Passport-size Photographs.
  • Sponsorship Letter confirming a monthly allowance of 750 Omani Rials, along with health insurance and medical malpractice insurance.
  • Vaccination record as per SQUH policy.
  • Medical check-up report.
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency (for graduates from non-English-speaking universities):
  • IELTS score of 6.0 or above, or
  • OET Grade B
  • MD Certificate Verification through OMSB - All certificates must be validated by the Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) via the DataFlow system: https://ccp3.dfgateway.com/cm/

4. The applicant must meet the registration and training requirements, including passing the personal interview, in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Internship Training Program.

Note: All certificates should be authenticated from the country where applicant finished his/her M.D. Additional attestation should be sought from Ministry of Foreign Affairs Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.

 

Costs of Training Services and Financial Allocations:

1. The applicant does not bear any rewards or financial allocations for the Sultan Qaboos University.

2. The applicant must provide a sponsorship letter stating that she/he will receive a monthly allowance of 750 Omani Riyals for 12 months before

acceptance in internship program.

3. The applicant shall bear the fee of the training and all other cost related to the program as follows:

  • Application fee: The application and registration fee of 20 Omani Riyals.
  • Internship Program fee: The training fee for one year (the duration of training in the program) which is 3,000 Omani Rials (Three thousand Omani Rials). This fee is non-refundable. If the internship program exceeds the standard duration of 12 months for any reason, the intern will be required to pay an additional training fee.
  • Health insurance cost.
  • Medical Malpractice insurance cost.
  • The fee for issuing a letter of completion of the internship training program of 5 Omani Rials.
  • The fee for issuing the internship certificate of 20 Omani Rials.
  • The fee for issuing a replacement certificate for a lost internship certificate of 40 Omani rials.

  • The Internship Training Program operates on three intakes each year:
    1. First Intake:
    - Duration: 1 August to 31 July (one year)
    2. Second Intake:
    - Duration: 1 December to 30 November (one year)
    3. Third Intake:
    - Duration: 1 April to 31 March (one year)
