Guidance on Student Representation

Policy Statement

The COMHS is committed to working with students as partners in developing their educational programs and improving their learning environment.

 

1. Acronyms

CB: College Board

CC: Curriculum Committee

COMHS: College of Medicine and Health Sciences

CR: Cohort Representative.

PEC: Program Evaluation Committee

SQU: Sultan Qaboos University

SSLC: Student- Staff Liaison Committee

 

2.Purpose

SQU issued and implemented a number of resolutions to mandate students’ engagement in developing their educational experience and environment via student representation. In line with SQU mandate towards students’ representation, this policy aims to regulate and ensure appropriate representation of students in the College relevant committees.

 

3.Principles

3.1. Students are key partners in developing the educational program and learning environment.

3.2. Students’ activities should be facilitated, and students’ organizations should be supported.

3.3. Students have the right to express their views on the learning and teaching experience.

3.4. Students’ appropriate participation in college committees must be ensured.

3.5. Student representation is a voluntary task.

 

4.Objectives

4.1. To create a formal channel for students to express their views and concerns to college administration.

4.2. To ensure student involvement at all levels of decision-making processes at the college.

4.3. To encourage student participation in the development and evaluation of the curriculum.

4.4. To enhance alliance between students, faculty, and college administration.

 

5.Procedure of Cohort Representatives Selection

Eligibility criteria

Students must fulfil the following criteria when selected and during their representation period:

5.1. Maintain common courtesy and professional behavior as an individual student.

5.2. Maintain academic integrity in all actions and conducts.

5.3. Maintain a semester and a cumulative GPA of not less than 2.0.

 

Selection procedure

5.4. At the beginning of each academic year, for each new cohort, two cohort representatives (one male and one female) to be elected by their cohort colleagues and continue until graduation.

5.5. All students can participate in electing CRs, two per cohort, one male and one female.

5.6. The names of CRs should be communicated to the respective assistant dean.

5.7. Any CR who wishes to resign can do so any time

5.8. Any CR must resign if s/he does not fulfil the eligibility criteria at any time.

5.9. The College may decide to impeach representation from any student who may not rightfully exercise his/her role or refuse to resign for not fulfilling the eligibility criteria.

5.10. When a CR position becomes vacant, the relevant cohort must then elect a new CR.

5.11. All CRs from all cohorts become members of SSLC.

5.12. CRs in the SSLC elect and vote for one student to be a student representative in CB.

5.13. Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Studies selects one student per program to be representative in CC.

5.14. Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Studies selects one student per program to be representative in PEC.

5.15. Any CR cannot be a representative in more than one College Committee in addition to SSLC.

5.16. The College may decide to add one or more CR or any other student in other College committees.
