The Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Sultan Qaboos is proud to participate in the successful postgraduate residency programs.

This is one of the oldest EM residency programs in the country, having started in 1997 before OMSB takes over.

Our residents enjoy the many educational opportunities provided by D of EM.

In addition to the major programs in Postgraduate medical education, the Department has a number of ongoing activities for a broad Emergency Medicine audience. This includes programs in Bedside Ultrasound and Simulation, workshops  , symposiums as well as regular academic sessions for Grand Rounds, and Journal Club.

 

 

The following tools are used to assess the acquisition of the medical competencies :

A system of workplace based training and assessment is laid out by OMSB assessment committee a. monthly assessment.

  1. 6 months and annual evaluations .
  2. end of year written and oral exam.
  3. one to one teaching .
  4. clinical evaluation exercise .
  5. practice oral examination .
  6. promotional diagram .

All residents present at journal club, grand rounds, and must complete a scholarly project at the annual research day.

Residents must complete and present a research project by the end of 3rd year, submit an abstract to OMSB or other meeting, and submit a manuscript by the end of 5th year

 

 

2. The Residents of the other branches participating in OMSB (Oman Medial & Specialty Board) program of, Family and Community Medicine ,Radiology , whom rotate through our department at various stages of their training.

They will have a training supervisor for their ER rota under the overall direction of the Oman medical speciality board . Asystem of workplace based training and assessment is laid out by OMSB assessment committee

They are exposed to real emergencies and given full chance to handle patients independently as an active member under the supervision of shift supervisor. They were given chance to masteries their already learned skills like suturing other simple procedures and were taught new skills like, intubations, central line placements, basic bed side ultrasound etc. Senior residents handle more critical patients in the bay area under supervision of the shift in charge. Apart from clinical activities, academic activities of minimum 4hours per week are mandatory. These activities include case or topic presentations, Journal clubs, workshops etc .

Interns rotate through our department as one month elective rotation during General Surgery posting. Interns were given hand outs and one day tour to the department at the start of their rotation. During their rotation interns were exposed to real emergency cases like chest pain, poly trauma, poisoning etc

All interns were assessed by shift supervisor at the end of every call and final assessment is given on the basis of performance in all shifts. Apart from knowledge, punctuality, overall behavior as part of team facing busy shifts were also taken into account..

  

The department welcomes international medical students different countries for  doing electives in the department. This year we received 4 students from 4 different countries..

  

In addition to that our department regularly receive foreign medical graduates for clinical attachments.

Department of Emergency Medicine is the heart of Sultan Qaboos University Hospital being a tertiary, referral and training hospital in the country staffed with the most efficient and effective team. Department of Emergency Medicine is regularly swooned by trauma cases in different scale and degree. To better equip our staff, the department had launched its Trauma Course tailored mainly for the nurses with the goal of enhancing staffs knowledge and refine trauma management skills thus improving patient care outcome .This course did not only educate nurses but it sustain the departments quality improvements initiative.
