Welcome to the website of the Department of Human and Clinical Anatomy, College of medicine & health Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University. Here you can find out about the programs and courses offered by the department as well as updates about the activities conducted in the three aspects of teaching, research and community service.

The main aim of the Department of Human and Clinical Anatomy is to equip medical, nursing and biomedical sciences students with a sound basic anatomical knowledge that enables them to understand the morphology and the structure-function relationship of the human body at the cellular, tissues, organ system and organismal levels. It also provides a higher level of clinical and applied anatomy in the hope that students will use it in their future career and promote safe medical practice.

To fulfil this aim, the department offers subject-based and integrated courses that cover gross anatomy, histology, embryology and neuroanatomy. This is complimented by clinically-oriented teaching modalities including surface and living anatomy, clinical skills and medical imaging. The department also encourages and promotes innovation in basic, clinical and educational anatomical research. We are also open to collaboration with researchers from within and outside SQU and Oman.

Last but not least, the department with its available facilities continuously provides academic and technical expertise and logistic support to different departments and units at Sultan Qaboos University and other institutions in the country with regards to activities involving the use of cadaveric materials for educational and scientific purposes.

Program Overview

The program combines course work Credits in addition to research leading to a thesis. The student should complete the course work requirements specified in the degree plan with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00. For the thesis, the candidate is required to conduct the necessary literature search, undertake the research, analyse the results, write the report and communicate the results at an oral defense. This work need not necessarily be original research, but should be a new application of ideas. The student should identify the research problem in consultation with the supervisor, which normally takes place in the second semester. The student should register for the thesis in the third semester after having completed at least 12 credits of the course work.

Admission Requirements

Applicant should have a Bachelor's degree in Human anatomy or in a related subject from Sultan Qaboos University or from any other recognized university, with Cumulative Grade Point Average of not less than 2.75 on a 4 point scale, or

- Two year’s Work experience is a must for candidates with Cumulative Grade Point Average between 2.5 and 2.74 in the Bachelor degree, or

- A Bachelor degree from a recognized institution and a postgraduate diploma in a related specialization from a recognized institution of higher education with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4-point scale or its equivalent.

Candidates from other disciplines may be asked to attend additional bridging courses before starting the program.

Applicants must submit a release letter or a study leave from employer for full time study, addressed to the dean of postgraduate studies at SQU. Un-employed applicant needs to submit a statement from The Public Authority of Manpower Register documenting the unemployment status of the applicant.

Selection Criteria Pass the pre-assessment and the interview held in the department.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

The Department provides technical and logistic services for activities related to anatomical sciences and require the use of cadaveric specimens or other related resources. This includes conducting gross anatomy and histology practicals of the courses offered by the College of Nursing and the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences at SQU.

Subject to availability, the anatomy facility is used for postgraduate clinical training courses organized by clinicians and faculty at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences and Sultan Qaboos University Hospital. Such courses are usually conducted in collaboration with other national institutions such as the Ministry of Health and Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB).

We also receive requests from local academic institutions to have access to our collection of cadaveric specimens so that their students have the opportunity to study anatomy using our resources.

The department extends its services to the wider community through receiving school visits on a regular basis where the students get exposed to medical sciences in general and anatomy in particular.
