The UNESCO Chair in Marine Biotechnology was established in 2004 to stimulate marine biotechnology in the region and coordinate an international work on marine biotechnology. The main purpose of the Chair is to promote research, training and information in the field of marine biotechnology. In order to achieve this, the Chair’s goals include establishing integrated research programs in marine biotechnology, introducing the best approaches to marine research to SQU and the sultanate, and conducting genetic studies to develop innovative methods in medical and biological sciences.
