Program Overview

The PhD program in Law aims to:

*Attracting graduate students by providing a distinguished and pioneering national doctoral program that enjoys local, regional, and international recognition.

• Preparing legal academics and qualifying them theoretically and practically to lead higher education and scientific research in the field of law.

• Providing public and private sector institutions with highly qualified legal cadres.

• Contributing to keeping pace with the Sultanate's legislative progress through the recommendations of academic theses addressed to the national legislator.

• Disseminating the culture of distinguished and purposeful legal research to solve theoretical and practical problems.

 

Admission Requirements

In addition to the requirements set forth in the 2018 Graduate Studies Academic Regulations regarding the application for admission, accredited academic certificates, a copy of the passport and ID card, and proof of financial support and medical fitness, admission to the PhD in Law program requires the following:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in law from a recognized educational institution accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation.
  2. A master's degree in law from a recognized educational institution accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation, with a cumulative GPA of no less than 3.00 out of 4 or its equivalent, or on a pass/fail basis, provided that the relevant department evaluates the applicant.

Or A master cumulative GPA ranging between 2.75 and 2.99 on a 4-point scale or its equivalent, taking into account the applicant’s work experience (not less than 2 years following completion of an undergraduate degree) and any academic activities they are engaged in.

  1. Meeting the required level of language proficiency.
  2. The candidate's affiliation must be identified based on the research proposal submitted, and the importance of requiring a specialization sequence in the candidate's application must be emphasized, ensuring that their master's degree specialization matches the specialization stated in the research proposal.
  3. Submit a comprehensive research proposal characterized by novelty, originality, and scientific contribution. It must clarify the topic of the research, including the study problem, its theoretical framework, previous studies, research objectives and questions, as well as the research methodology and research tools.
  4. Submit two recommendation letters from academics, demonstrating the applicant's competence in the required field and their research capabilities.

 

 

English Proficiency

 Writing thesis in Arabic:

The applicant must demonstrate proficiency in the English language by obtaining a score of (4.5) or higher on the Academic IELTS exam, or a score of (49) or higher on the International TOEFL (IBT) exam. Both TOEFL and IELTS scores must be valid for two years from the date of the exam until the date of application submission.

Writing thesis in English:

Achieving a score of (6.5) or higher on the IELTS Academic exam, or a score of (90) or higher on the TOEFL-IBT exam. Both TOEFL and IELTS results must be valid for two years from the date of the exam until the date of application submission.

An applicant may be exempted from the English language proficiency requirement in the following cases:

1. If their mother tongue is English.

2. If they have met the language proficiency requirements for the Master's program, as per Clause (4-3-1) of the Academic Regulations for Postgraduate Studies at Sultan Qaboos University 2018, provided that the date of their graduation certificate is no more than two years old at the time of submitting the application.

 

Selection Criteria

 

 Applicants will be selected according to the following criteria:

- Research proposal evaluation criterion (60%), with the applicant receiving a score of at least 40% to proceed to the next stage.

- Oral examination criterion (40%), to determine the candidate's suitability for the program, their research interests, and their academic goals.

The minimum passing requirement is 70% of the total weighting.
