Medical Microbiology

The department of Microbiology and Immunology is offering a wide range of research projects in both sections of microbiology and immunology. In Microbiology current research is focused on molecular virology and bacteriology such as emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance and synergy testing, genomics and exploring mechanisms of horizontal gene transfer in spreading AMR, neglected tropical diseases, emerging, vector-borne, zoonotic diseases and other parasitic infections, epidemiology of human papilloma virus, hepatitis A, cytomegalovirus etc.  Immunology research focuses on autoimmunity, immunity to hepatitis C virus infection and immunodeficiency, both primary and acquired, including HIV/AIDS. There is active international research cooperation between the faculty members of the Department and their counterparts in Austria, Canada, France, Germany, the UAE, the UK, the USA and India. The faculty members have been recipients of several grants which resulted in good robust research and publications.

Research interests

  • Molecular characterization and clinical outcome on COVID-19.
  • Whole genome sequencing and Molecular profile of clinical multi-drug resistant isolates.
  • Role of Mobile genetic elements in dissemination of AMR.
  • Antimicrobial resistance and synergy testing.
  • Epidemiological studies on common infections including MRSA, UTI and pneumonia.
  • Human papilloma virus and Hepatitis C and enteric viruses in clinical specimens.
  • Autoimmunity.
  • Immunity to hepatitis C virus infection and immunodeficiency, both primary and acquired, including HIV/AIDS.
