About the office

Welcome to the office of Assistant Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences. The College offer several MSc and PhD programs. These programs cover a wide range of health-related sciences such biochemistry, genetics, clinical pharmacy, and public health. The College is actively engaged in biomedical and clinical research and its researchers have been successful in obtaining funding from both internal and external sources.

The office is responsible of coordinating the College's postgraduate programs and research in collaboration with the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies and the Deanship of Research.

Assistant Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research

Overview

The office of the Assistant Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Research office is responsible of coordinating postgraduate admission and registration processes with the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies and the Deanship of Admission and Registration. Together with the College Postgraduate Studies Committee, the office is responsible for coordinating the implementation, review, and introduction of College's postgraduate programs.

MSc Programs

The College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University offers a master's Program in Biomedical Sciences in response to the growing demand for graduates with specialized knowledge and practical expertise in the area of Biomedical Sciences. The number and variety of job opportunities for such well-qualified personnel is steadily expanding, in both the public and in the private sector. The MSc programs in the College of Medicine and Health Sciences are two-year full-time programs. Currently there are six MSc programs in the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, some of these have been running actively.

 

Admission requirements

The Minimum admission requirements

  1. Applicants should have a bachelor's degree in health sciences or medical laboratory sciences or an MD from Sultan Qaboos University, or from any recognized university.
  2. Candidates from other disciplines, such as Science or Agriculture, will be considered, but may need to complete additional qualifying courses to provide them with the necessary scientific background in the field of study.
  3. A Cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA) of not less than 2.75 on a 4-point scale or equivalent in any other system. The Deanship of Postgraduate Studies will make the assessment for equivalency acceptance.
  4. Work experience is a must for candidates with cGPA between 2.5 and 2.74 in the bachelor's degree.
  5. A bachelor degree from a recognized institution and a post-baccalaureate diploma with a minimum of cGPA of 3.00 on a 4-point scale or equivalent in any other system.
  6. Achieve Band (6) in IELTS Academic or score 79 or higher in the international TOEFL-IBT or passing the English course LANC6000 for applicants with a score of 5.5 in the IELTS or a score of 69 in the TOFEL-IBT.
  7. Applicants must be a full-time student for two years for all programs or part time for MSc in Epidemiology and Medical Statistics for three years.
  8. Pass the interview held in the department and the qualifying exam/s (if necessary).

Overview

The office of the Assistant Dean for Postgraduate and Research is responsible for coordinating the processes pertaining to research and consultancy in the College in association with the Deanship of Research. The office, together with the College Research Committee, oversees the funding processes for research projects by:

  • Receiving and evaluating research proposals.
  • Monitoring the progress of approved research projects until completion.
  • Following and monitoring research to ensure no deviation from the approved protocol.
  • Suspending or withdrawing approval for any project, which no longer complies with the approved research protocol or where the research ceases to be ethically acceptable.
  • Keeping a registry of all ethically approved research at the College in liaison with the Medical Research Ethics Committee and Ethics Committee for Animal Use in Research.

Overview

The PhD Programs at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences are research-based programs aimed at developing research expertise in different specializations and equipping students with relevant specialized research skills. Coursework is prescribed if deficiencies are identified.

 

Admission requirements

The minimum admission requirements

 

  1. Applicants should have a bachelor and MSc degree in health sciences or medical laboratory sciences or an MD from Sultan Qaboos University, or from any recognized university.
  2. MSc cumulative grade point average (cGPA) of not less than 3.00 on a 4-point scale or its equivalent in any other system and the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies will make the assessment for equivalency acceptance. Work experience and or any academic activities is a must for candidates with cGPA between 2.75 and 2.99.
  3. Applicants must be a full-time student for four years.
  4. Applicants should submit a statement on the objectives and goals of research proposed.
  5. Achieve band (6.5) in IELTS academic or a score of 90 or higher in the international TOEFL-IBT or passing the English LANC6001 for applicants with a score of 6 in IELTS or a score of 79 in the TOFEL-IBT.
  6. Pass the interview held in the department (if necessary).
