The College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University has, since its inception, offered an Overseas Elective Program as an integral component of the M.D. program curriculum. The program is designed for medical students who have successfully completed the Junior Clerkship and provides an opportunity to undertake a period of supervised clinical training in recognized medical institutions abroad.

As a mandatory component of the curriculum, the elective enables students to gain clinical experience in diverse healthcare settings beyond the local environment. Students are required to complete a minimum of 6 weeks to a maximum of 8 weeks of elective training, which may be undertaken in one or multiple rotations, provided that each rotation is no less than 2 weeks in duration.

Students independently secure placements at approved institutions worldwide, subject to availability and institutional acceptance. All elective placements must be approved by the College prior to commencement, and students are expected to adhere to the academic requirements and schedule of the M.D. program.

Aims and Objectives

The Overseas Elective Program aims to enhance and broaden students’ medical education through meaningful international clinical exposure. In alignment with international medical education standards, the program seeks to:

  • Provide exposure to diverse healthcare systems, clinical practices, and patient populations.

  • Strengthen clinical knowledge and practical skills through supervised experience in different settings.

  • Promote independent learning, adaptability, and professional responsibility in unfamiliar environments.

  • Enhance communication and interpersonal skills within multicultural and multidisciplinary teams.

  • Expand understanding of global health challenges, including diseases and conditions less commonly encountered in the local context.

  • Encourage critical reflection on medical practice and healthcare delivery across different systems.

  • Support students’ academic and professional development, including future training and career opportunities.

  • Foster cultural awareness, ethical practice, and a global perspective in healthcare.

SQU medical students participating in the Overseas Elective Program are expected to adhere to the following key requirements:

  • Eligibility: Students must have successfully completed the Junior Clerkship phase of the M.D. program prior to undertaking the elective.
  • Elective Requirement: The elective is a mandatory component of the curriculum and must be completed in a recognized medical institution, preferably overseas.
  • Approval: All elective placements must be approved by the College prior to commencement. Changes to the approved destination are not permitted unless formally accepted by the host institution and approved by the College.
  • Academic Commitment: The elective must not conflict with the academic schedule of the M.D. program. Core rotations and academic requirements will not be modified to accommodate elective arrangements.
  • Travel and Timing: Students may only proceed with their elective after receiving their final Junior Clerkship results and within the approved academic timeframe.
  • Compliance and Conduct: Students are required to adhere to the regulations of the host institution and are expected to demonstrate professionalism at all times, representing the College, University, and the Sultanate of Oman appropriately.
  • Health and Legal Requirements: Students must ensure that all necessary health, insurance, and legal requirements (e.g., valid health insurance, immunizations, and travel documentation) are completed prior to travel.
  • Financial and Logistical Responsibility: Students are responsible for arranging their accommodation, travel, and any associated costs, unless otherwise specified by the host institution.
  • Completion Requirements: Upon completion of the elective, students must submit all required documentation, including evaluation forms and reports, within the specified timeframe in order to receive academic credit.
  • Alternative Arrangements: Students who are unable to undertake the elective abroad are required to complete an approved local elective in accordance with College regulations.
