Research is considered one of the main pillars of any society that seeks to develop its people academically, scientifically, intellectually, culturally, and technically in order to keep pace with rapid global changes and developments. Research is also one of the most important sources of knowledge generation and leads to innovation and the creation of intellectual property that can act to elevate the status of societies and institutions of higher education. Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has recognized, ever since its establishment, the vital importance of research for the development and advancement of the university as a well-known academic and scientific institution.  As a result, SQU has directed a great deal of its attention to research as a vital foundation for university education and postgraduate studies.

To this end, the university has made great strides in establishing a solid research base in various scientific and social fields, and it always seeks to enhance its research systems to reinforce all activities in terms of both quantity and quality. The development of a strategic plan and establishment of an independent deanship for research had a great impact on the standardization and systematization of research in addition to lending a great deal of support to the development of research and the establishment of a research culture at the university. The deanship consists of three main departments: the Research Department, the Innovation Affairs Department, and the Academic Publications and Outreach Department.

The Research Department strives to provide financial support through His Majesty’s Trust Fund Grant for Strategic Research, internal grant and collaborative research, consultancles, Research Council grants, and external grants. The Deanship of Research is the main driver of the university’s research movement; it also plays a key role in developing research leading to innovation.

The Academic Publications and Outreach Department specializes in the activation and implementation of the Academic Publication Board’s decisions regarding publishing academic books, journals and other scholarly publications. In addition, the department plays a vital role in keeping track of the scientific publishing activities of the university and the management of faculty participation in international conferences. The department also communicates and disseminates research activities performed by the university both within academic circles and across the wider community.

The Deanship of Postgraduate Studies works tirelessly to improve the quality of postgraduate education in the university while also taking into account global standards for admission and graduation. Consequently, the deanship is continuously and relentlessly developing and redeveloping various programs to address local and international changes and needs. The university also offers a variety of diploma, masters and doctorate programs across various colleges and majors. Master's programs offered by the deanship include multiple options.  These include the master’s by thesis, master’s by coursework and thesis option, Master’s by coursework, and master’s by coursework and comprehensive examination. Furthermore, the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies effectively contributes to building research caliber at the university by training researchers to refine their research capabilities, which will contribute to the establishment of a research Culture nationwide.

In addition, SQU’s ten research centers play prominent roles in conducting as well as developing research at the university and in the country.  The ten centers engage in research at the national level in various fields as befits each center’s specialization. The importance of these centers has increased as a result of their cumulative experience and expertise in various fields, which they have gained throughout the years. This has made them houses of expertise which the nation and its various institutions can depend on in matters related to scientific inquiry and consultation.

Since its inception, SQU has realized the importance of research and its development and has always succeeded in devising methods that would increase research output and serve the community by adduessing its challenges, solving its problems and contributing to its development and progress. The university works hard to achieve its goals and, in this, is ever guided by the enlightened vision of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, his intellect and his inspiring guidance and leadership.  In light of His Majesty’s insightful vision, the university follows a path that leads to development and progress in various fields relevant to postgraduate studies and research.
