SQU and Tallinn University Explore Avenues of Cooperation

A delegation from Tallinn University, Estonia, led by its Rector, Prof. Tõnu Viik, began a two-day visit to Sultan Qaboos University today. The visit seeks to enhance academic and cultural collaboration between the two institutions, with a focus on the humanities, educational technology, and cross-cultural engagement.

The delegation was welcomed by His Highness Sayyid Dr. Fahd bin Al Julanda Al Said, the Vice Chancellor, in the presence of Her Highness Sayyida Dr. Muna bint Fahd Al Said, Assistant Vice Chancellor for International Cooperation, and several faculty members. During the meeting, both sides discussed potential areas for cooperation and knowledge exchange.

In his remarks, His Highness provided an overview of the University’s mission and vision, and how they align with the strategic goals of Oman Vision 2040. He emphasised the importance of preserving national identity while remaining adaptive to ongoing developments across various fields, particularly in technology and education.

Prof. Tõnu Viik introduced Tallinn University’s academic profile and shared insights into Estonian culture. He highlighted the university’s efforts to maintain a balance between conducting research in English and promoting the Estonian language and heritage. He also outlined the diverse structure of Tallinn University, which includes schools in the humanities, digital technologies, educational sciences, natural sciences, and health, and noted its growing interest in Arabic studies.

The conversation also addressed the influence of contemporary global trends, including the prevalence of screen time, artificial intelligence and the rise of digital literacy, on education, research, and broader societal dynamics. Both parties shared views on how to navigate these challenges within academic frameworks.

Further discussions centred on research opportunities in Oman, with a particular focus on how SQU supports research initiatives and innovation. His Highness reiterated the University's commitment to graduating not only qualified individuals but also capable and forward-looking generations equipped to drive sustainable success.
