Third Meeting of the National Bioethics Committee for 2025

The National Bioethics Committee held its third meeting of the year this morning in the University Council Hall. The meeting was chaired by His Highness Sayyid Dr. Fahd bin Al Julanda Al Said, the Vice-Chancellor and Chair of the Committee, in the presence of committee members.

His Highness commenced the meeting expressing his gratitude and appreciation to the members for their attendance and constructive contributions. He then reviewed the agenda, which included discussions on a number of important topics.

The meeting continued discussions on preparations for the Fourth International Conference on Bioethics, scheduled to be held in early 2027 under the theme ‘Ethics and Modern Healthcare’. Dr. Ahmed bin bin Said Al-Busaidi, Secretary of the Committee, presented the Committee’s work plan for the coming year.

The committee also approved the National Document on Ethical Issues Related to Reproduction Among Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities, which will be submitted to the relevant authorities for endorsement. Members were also briefed on the ongoing arrangements for organising a national workshop dedicated to members of hospital ethics committees.

The follow-up report included discussions on recent developments regarding the proposal for ethical approval of research, as well as ethical issues related to the collection and preservation of human gametes, and ethical considerations regarding the brain death protocol.

At the conclusion of the meeting, His Highness Sayyid Dr. Fahd bin Al Julanda Al Said, Chair of the Committee, extended his sincere thanks and appreciation to the members for their attendance and valuable contributions in following up and implementing the outcomes of previous meetings. He wished everyone continued success in their work.
