College of Medicine Co-Organises Bioinformatics Workshop
The Department of Microbiology at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences organised an advanced training workshop titled ‘Muscat One Health Bioinformatics Training’, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation (WHO). The workshop was held from 21 to 25 December 2025 at the Kempinski Hotel Muscat.
The workshop was organised under the leadership of Dr. Hanan bint Salim Al-Kindi, Director of the Central Public Health Laboratory, as the principal organising body. It was conducted within the framework of strengthening integration between national health institutions and the academic sector, while supporting the One Health approach.
The workshop benefited from notable scientific and organisational contributions by Dr. Zaaima bint Juma Al-Jabri, Head of the Department of Microbiology, and Prof. Ahmed Abdel Moneim, Professor of Virology. Both played a pivotal role in designing the training programme, as well as delivering specialised scientific lectures and hands-on training sessions.
The scientific content focused on bacteriology and virology, highlighting the vital role of bioinformatics in tracking disease outbreaks, analysing genetic mutations in microorganisms, and enhancing epidemiological surveillance and early response to infectious diseases. The programme combined theoretical lectures with advanced practical applications and brought together a distinguished group of specialists and researchers from various health and academic institutions. This contributed to strengthening national capacities in genomic data analysis and its application in public health.
This participation reflects the College of Medicine and Health Sciences’ commitment to strengthening institutional partnerships, supporting international scientific initiatives, and contributing to the preparation of qualified national cadres capable of addressing current and future health challenges through the use of the latest scientific technologies.
