The Geography programs (Bachelor and Master degrees) have under comprehensive self-study with a review by external reviewer. Then the department achieved international accreditation in 2017 by the German Agency for Quality Assurance (AQAS) through Accreditation of Study Programs. The Accreditation procedure and the resolution are based on standards and guidelines for quality assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG). The program with the AQAS criteria for program accreditation and is in compliance with the requirements defined by the ESG.

The department of Geography at SQU is proud to be announced the first to be accredited for both Bachelor and Master degrees among Universities in Arab world. The department obtained the international accreditation for both programs as follows,

  • B.A Geography 

The B.A. program accreditation duration is from May 23rd 2017 to 30th Sept 2022.

  • MA Geography Review

The B.A. program accreditation duration is from Feb 23rd 2016 to 30th Sept 2021.

Educational Objectives

  • To produce graduates who know and understand the interrelationships between fundamental concepts and skills in the major domains of geography (physical geography, human geography, human-environment interactions, and geographic information system).
  • To produce graduates who can apply their geographical knowledge and practical skills to help them manage issues concerning people, places and environments.
  • To produce graduates who understand and can apply descriptive and analytical knowledge about map reading, statistics and geospatial technologies to the continuous changing interaction of people to their physical and human environments at local to global scales.
  • To motivate graduates for innovation and creativity.

Educational Outcomes

  • Graduates will learn fundamental concepts in physical geography, human geography, regional planning and human-environment interactions in an interdisciplinary context, while developing technical proficiency.
  • Graduates will learn to describe, analyze, and explain the patterns, processes, and interactions of human and physical phenomena on the Earth’s surface.
  • Graduates will practice their knowledge through training and field work.
  • Graduates will learn to use creative thinking, problem solving, communication, innovation, collaboration and critical thinking skills.

Educational Objectives

  • To develop a basic understanding of the discipline of geography as a whole, its relationship with cognate fields, and its contribution to knowledge. 
  • To develop a detailed understanding of at least one specialty within the discipline. 
  • To develop an ability to do independent research of professional quality. 
  • To develop an ability to communicate the results of research in both oral and written forms.

Educational Outcomes

  • Graduates will develop a working knowledge of the general literature in geography, and will become familiar with the structure of the discipline, including the principal sub-disciplines, the main philosophical approaches and unique geographical concepts.
  • Graduates will develop an understanding of a particular literature, its major works, its historical development and its main theories and empirical findings.
  • Graduates will gain theoretical and practical knowledge of specific research techniques and will demonstrate this knowledge by carrying out original research.
  • The thesis ultimately provides evidence of the ability to write up research and is accompanied by a formal presentation and oral defense of their work to the department.
