Tourism Department

On behalf of colleagues and students, I am pleased to welcome you to the website of the Department of Tourism.

The phenomenon of travel is one of the oldest phenomena associated with humans and society. Travel has been linked to various social aspects such as religion, business, health and the search for knowledge. In the modern era, tourism and hospitality have become leading industries associated with different aspects of civilization, including knowledge acquisition, culture, society or commerce.

Modern tourism and hospitality are dynamic, fast changing and challenging; they required talented, highly skilled, and knowledgeable graduates to lead and manage them. Since its establishment in 2001, the Department of Tourism at SQU has played a leading role in the development of the tourism sector in the Sultanate whether through its scientific research contribution, preparing qualified graduates ready to contribute to the management of this promising sector; or community services. The Department contributes, along with some wide tourism stakeholders, to the creation of enriching tourism experiences that reflect Omani values and traditions.

At national and international levels, the Department contributes scientific studies and its research is published in well-established peer reviewed journals and publishers. Faculty members of the Department serve as reviewers for known international tourism and hospitality journals. Nationally, the Department conducts studies for a number of institutions linked to the sector, as well as, provides many workshops and participates in preparing industry training programs.

Through its accredited Undergraduate Study programmes, the Department offers students the opportunity to specialise in either Tourism Management or Hospitality Management. In addition, students select either German or French language, as part of their degree. At the Postgraduate level, the Department currently offers an MA Program in Tourism Destination Management program.

In conclusion, I welcome you again and wish you enjoyable time and successful studies.

Sincerely,

Dr. Hamed Almuhrzi
