Bachelor's Program in History:

       The Bachelor of Arts in History program began in 1987. It aims to strengthen students’ skills by offering a comprehensive academic study in the fields of local, regional, and global history. Through a scientific and analytical methodological approach, the program contributes to understanding the development of human societies across different eras, and enhances students’ skills in critical thinking and rigorous historical research—thereby fostering their cultural awareness and national identity.

The department strives to achieve the following objectives in its Undergraduate program (Bachelor):

•    To provide students with a broad knowledge of history, covering ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary periods at the local, regional, and global levels.
•    To develop critical and independent thinking skills through reading and analyzing historical sources and interpreting historical events and phenomena using historical research methodologies, in order to understand the present and anticipate the future.
•    To prepare academically and professionally qualified graduates for careers in education, scientific research, media, diplomacy, and cultural and heritage institutions.
•    To promote cultural and historical identity by reinforcing awareness of the history of Omani, Arab, and Islamic societies and connecting it to global historical contexts.
•    To equip students with scientific research skills in the field of historical studies, with a commitment to research ethics and quality, and the use of modern tools and digital technologies.

Master program in History:
     
      The Master's Program in History aims to prepare distinguished researchers capable of producing historical knowledge and analyzing diverse historical issues through rigorous academic methodologies. The department aspires for the program to be among the leading academic programs at both the local and regional levels by ensuring adherence to quality standards, research competencies, and responsiveness to developments in the academic field of historical studies.

The department strives to achieve the following objectives in its postgraduate (Master’s) program:

•    Provide students with advanced knowledge in historical studies, with an emphasis on specialized areas (e.g., Islamic history, modern and contemporary history).
•    Develop historical research skills by training students in the use of historical methodologies and the analysis of primary and secondary sources.
•    Enhance critical thinking by enabling students to discuss historical issues within diverse epistemological and methodological frameworks.
•    Promote scholarly output aimed at serving society through the integration of history with contemporary Omani realities, and the use of historical heritage to foster national identity.
•    Foster lifelong independent learning skills through open-ended questioning, critical reading, and the acquisition of diverse knowledge.

PhD Program in History:

       The PhD in History (Doctor of Philosophy) program was established in 2010. It aims to prepare graduates who hold the doctoral degree and are well qualified with solid theoretical knowledge and advanced research competences in the field of history. The program aspires to be one of the distinguished doctoral programs in history at the local, regional, and wider academic levels, distinguished by its specialised courses in various branches of history as well as by its openness to related disciplines.

Program Vision:
To develop a PhD in History program characterised by academic distinction and high reputation in the field of historical studies.

Program Mission:
The program seeks to prepare holders of the PhD degree who possess high levels of competence in the field of historical studies and are capable of conducting original, rigorous research in various areas of history.

Program Objectives:
1.    To prepare national cadres who are highly qualified and specialised in history at an advanced level, and who are able to work in universities, research centres, institutions and ministries concerned with history and heritage, and with the documentation of historical records.
2.    To provide students with advanced knowledge and methodological tools that enable them to carry out in-depth historical research across different periods and fields, including the editing and critical study of manuscripts and historical documents.
3.    To meet the needs of the labour market by offering an opportunity for MA graduates in history—especially those working in the education sector and other educational institutions and research centres—to continue their postgraduate studies and specialise further in history.
4.    To strengthen cooperation with relevant academic and research institutions at the local, regional and international levels, in order to promote collaboration and the exchange of expertise, particularly in the field of providing scholarly and consultative services.
