The Department of Information Studies was established in the academic year 1987-1988, to meet the needs of the Omani society for qualified specialists in the field of Libraries and Information Science. The department began by offering a Bachelor’s degree in Information Studies followed by the Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, and recently the PhD in Information Studies.

During teaching activities, special attention is given to the practical application of Information and Communications Technology. Thus, in addition to lectures, research assignments and discussion sessions, emphasis is placed on practical training and field trips to information and learning centers, as well as on intensive practice in the department’s laboratories.

Graduates of the three programs have the opportunity to work in public, university, and special libraries, as well as in learning resource centers in both public and private sectors.

The University Deanship of Admission and Registration usually suggests an admission policy according to the University plan and available resources. The policy takes into consideration the needs of the different University units and the University Charter (article no.38). With regard to the bachelor degree in Information Studies, students are admitted to the program after fulfilling the following:

1. The requirements of the foundation year
2. IELTS Level 5 or SQU Level 6 in English

The total number of admitted students depends on a number of factors, such as the number of available faculty members in the Department and their assigned teaching hours as well as any urgent needs within the Omani labor market.

Applicants should have a Bachelor's degree in Library or Information Studies or any other related subject from Sultan Qaboos University or from any other recognized university, with Cumulative Grade Point Average of not less than 2.75 on a 4 point scale, or

- Two year’s Work experience is a must for candidates with Cumulative Grade Point Average between 2.5  and  2.74 in the Bachelor degree, or - Applicants who have a bachelor degree from a recognized institution and a postgraduate diploma in a related specialization from a recognized institution of higher education with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4-point scale or its equivalent.

• Candidates from other disciplines may be asked to attend additional bridging courses before starting the program.
• Applicants must submit a release letter or a study leave from their employer for full time study or a no objection letter for part-time study, addressed to the dean of postgraduate studies at SQU. Un-employed applicants need to submit a statement from The Public Authority of Manpower Register documenting the unemployment status of the applicant.

• Applicants should have a Bachelor degree from Sultan Qaboos University  or equivalent from a recognized university.
• Applicants should have a Master's degree in Library and Information Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Management or any other subject relevant to the Information Studies from Sultan Qaboos University or from any other recognized university.
• A Cumulative Grade Point Average of not less than 3.00 on a 4-point scale or equivalent in any other system and the Deanship of Postgraduate studies makes the assessment for equivalency acceptance.
• Applicants with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) between 2.75 and 2.99 on a 4.0 point scale may be considered for admission subject with a minimum of two years of work experience and any other academic activity.
• Two letters of reference from academics, to show competence in the discipline of interest and research capabilities. 
• Applicants should submit a statement of intent outlining the goals of the research proposed.
• Applicants must submit a release letter or a study leave from their employer, addressed to the dean of postgraduate studies at SQU. Un-employed applicants need to submit a statement from The Public Authority of Manpower Register documenting the unemployment status of the applicant.
