The Department of Sociology and Social Work was established in 1987 with the opening of the college of Arts and Social Sciences. In 2001, Social Work Program was added to the department and the name of the department was changed to Department of Sociology and Social Work.
It is worth mentioning that the society is now undergoing a series of social, information, technological and communication developments and changes that resulted in the emergence of many phenomena as well as social problems, which motivated the professionals in the department to address them and develop appropriate solutions.
The contemporary Omani society keeps pace with world developments and does not stand apart from it.
His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, May God protect him, with his wise leadership, management and independent decision, has been able to draw a distinctive role for the Sultanate through balanced decisions, the adoption of a language of dialogue, tolerance and understanding between the human components of society and non-intervention in the affairs of other societies is a principle and a virtue in the policies of the Sultanate. However, there are some different effects of globalization and the information and technological revolution on individuals, groups and society. As social and cultural challenges are emerging, not only sociologists, but also social workers are needed to integrate both majors; sociology and social work in addressing community issues.
