Business Communications Unit

Overview

The Business Communication Unit at the College of Economics and Political Science (CEPS), Sultan Qaboos University, is dedicated to preparing students for successful communication in professional, business, and organizational settings. Our mission is to equip future leaders with the essential communication skills demanded by both local and international markets.

Through a carefully designed sequence of courses, we emphasize a balance between professional content, communication competence, teamwork, critical thinking, public speaking, conflict management, technical writing, and creativity. The Unit offers three college requirement courses (BCOM 2911 Business Communication, BCOM 3921 Public Speaking in the Workplace, BCOM 4931 Technical Communication) and four major electives (BCOM 4921 Group and Team Communication, BCOM 4922 Communication for Creativity and Innovation, BCOM 4932 Communication for Conflict and Negotiations, BCOM 4933 Communication Networks and Diffusion of Innovation).

    Collaborative projects, team presentations, and critical discussions form an integral part of the learning experience, nurturing students’ abilities to work in teams and solve complex communication challenges.
  • Public Speaking for Business and Special Occasions:
    Students are trained to deliver clear, confident, and persuasive speeches, including sales pitches and ceremonial addresses, while understanding ethical and cross-cultural considerations in public speaking.
  • Conflict Management and Negotiation Skills:
    Focused on a communication-centered approach to conflict, the Unit equips students with negotiation tactics and conflict management strategies necessary for organizational effectiveness.
  • Technical and Business Writing:
    Students are introduced to professional genres such as proposals, resumes, and formal business reports, all essential for the global business environment.
  • Creativity and Innovation in Communication:
    By exploring psychological and neuroscientific foundations of creative thinking, students develop innovative solutions, design organizational cultures that foster creativity, and launch original projects aimed at community benefit.
