OVERVIEW

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (OBGYN) is one of the major departments in the College of Medicine & Health Sciences (COM&HS) and Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH) involved in teaching undergraduates, postgraduates and other allied professionals. It has been recognized as one of the centres of excellence in women’s healthcare in Oman that produces trained leaders in women’s health as an academic subspecialty, for community practice and research. The goal of the Department is to provide excellent women’s healthcare via general and subspecialty clinics such as general obstetrics and gynecology clinics, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Uro-gynaecology, Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility, Minimally Invasive surgery. We value team work, intellectual curiosity, compassion and academic excellence.

Our mission is to provide a structured educational environment in which dedicated teaching is integrated with graduated clinical responsibilities that promote intellectual growth in patient management at bedside, operating room, delivery suite and outpatient care. Our undergraduate and postgraduate programs train students to provide comprehensive healthcare for women by applying an evidence-based approach to clinical management with a view to providing the best possible care for all of our patients and promoting research.

Mission

To provide a highest quality patient care, medical research and structured educational environment in which dedicated teaching is integrated with the clinical responsibilities to produce physicians and researchers who will deliver and promote patient centered female health care that reflects the highest professional and ethical standards. While valuing teamwork, intellectual curiosity, compassion, and academic excellence, the department also seeks collaboration with national and international research bodies for the purpose of advancing health science and improving community services.

 

Objectives

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the College of Medicine and Health Sciences has its objectives aligned with the Sultan Qaboos University’s strategic objectives and these include:

  • Implement outcome based curriculum for undergraduate teaching.
  • Encourage research and innovation.
  • Provide continuous professional development to all staff.
  • Provide up to date subspecialty services.
  • Collaborate with regional and international bodies for the advancement of research and clinical expertise. 
   
  1. TEACHING PROGRAMMES
    1. Undergraduate Programs
      1. Pre-clerkship Program

There are approximately 130 students in the pre-clerkship phase every year; these students are taught for nine weeks on such topics as common symptoms during antenatal history-taking, as well as demonstrations on manikins; a review of reproductive anatomy; common symptoms and signs in obstetrics and gynaecology, such as menstrual dysfunction, infertility, menopause and early pregnancy problems; antepartum and postpartum haemorrhage; and normal delivery. A mini-clinical evaluation exercise (Mini-CEX) is conducted every three weeks for the students. The content of the teaching is made uniform with a common template.

    1. Senior Clerkship Program

There are about 110 to 120 senior clerkship students per year. They rotate for eight weeks during their 13-weeks clerkship. The block consists of eight weeks in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, three weeks in Child Health and two weeks in laboratories. The first two weeks of the Obstetrics & Gynaecology rotation consists of lectures and posting in the Skills Laboratory Centre. After that, they rotate for six weeks at four different sites (SQUH, Royal Hospital, Khoula Hospital and Armed Forces Hospital). They have five in-course assessments including Mini-CEX, case-based discussion, observed long case, multiple choice questions and key feature questions. At the end of the year they are assessed in blocks with a written component of multiple-choice questions, extended matching questions and short answer questions with a blueprint, as well as an objective structured clinical examination for the whole senior clerkship rotation.

  1. Postgraduate Programs
    1. Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) Residents

Residents from OMSB rotate in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. There are total of 44 OBGYN residents, out of which 10-14 residents rotate at SQUH at a given time. Both junior (years 1–3) and senior residents (years 4-6) are posted in the Department in the teams, wards and outpatient department (OPD). The residents are also posted in the following blocks: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Medicine, ultrasound, research, Genetics and Histopathology. A site supervisor assesses them every four weeks. Dr. Tamima AL Dughaishi is the Program Director and Dr. Rahma AL Hadabi is the Associate Program Director. Five faculty members in OMSB Examination Committee and Three in OBGYN Education Committee are from the Department of the Obstetrics & Gynecology and they are also members of various OMSB subcommittees. There are 20 faculty from the department who are official trainers and supervisors for the residents.

    1. Internship Program

Dr. Maha Al-Khaduri is the chairperson of the internship-training program and Dr. Maryam Al Shukri is the department internship coordinator.

    1. Interns

A total of 18 doctors were accepted into the internship program of the Department during the year 2022.

    1. GFP

Dr. Maha Al-Khaduri is a member of the GFP education committee in OMSB and Dr Rahma Al Haddabi and Dr Manjunath are the rotation supervisors.

    1. International Students

In 2022, there were only two elective students had joined the department.

CLINICAL & DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES

  1. Outpatient Services
  2. There are daily outpatient clinics dealing with general obstetrics and gynaecology patients as well as the following weekly subspecialty clinics: Infertility, High Risk pregnancy, Fetal Medicine, Urogynaecology and Gestational Diabetes, and Colposcopy clinics.

TRAINING COURSES AND CME ACTIVITIES

The Department has daily morning meetings wherein new admissions and emergencies are discussed, handovers and important announcements from the College and Hospital occur. The departmental activities consist of the following: monthly journal club, grand rounds, perinatal statistics, multidisciplinary Fetal Anomaly Group meetings attended by staff from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Department of Genetics and Paediatric surgery, and departmental meetings attended by all departmental staff, midwives and nurses as needed. In addition, there are weekly presentations by either residents, interns or junior staff.

 

Community Services

 3.1. Dr. Nihal AL Riyami:

  1. Organized the third hospital research day, SQUH, Muscat, Oman, 6th February, 2022
  2. Conducted a review for the Advanced Dentistry Program at OMSB on November 21, 2022
  3. Conducted a hands-on workshop on “Postpartum Hemorrhage” for OMSB OBGYN residents. November 28, 2022
  4. Chaired and conducted a review of the Otology Fellowship program at OMSB on December 12, 2022.
  5. Radio Interview on bioethical issues related to pregnancy & delivery.January 26.

 

  1. Reviewer for the following journals: SQUMJ (Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal and OMJ (Oman Medical Journal).

 

Dr. Maha AL khaduri:

  1. hosted the 8th International Festival of Paintings for Pediatric Patients (IFPPP) held on 8 November 2022 at SQU conference hall.
  2. 11 children from different countries attended. The paintings were displayed and the prizes were given to the best paintings by age category.
  3. Invited to be a founding member of the International West Asia North Africa Scientific Society (WANA) 8th June 2022.
  4. Organizer and speaker for Internship orientation program.
  5. As assistant Dean for training and community service and chairman of the internship program I organized the Internship orientation program for 2022/2023 cohort, which was held on 28th July 2022.

Dr. Maryam AL shukri:

  1. Member on the taskforce on investment in health care- women and child lab in December 2022 that was organized by Ministry of Health to brainstorm and draw a roadmap for private investment projects in women and child health. The recommended project was approved by the MOH.
  2. Chair of the scientific activity: The Role of Ultrasound in Evaluating Myometrial Pathologies and Infertility Cases Held on March 26th 2022, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman. Organized by Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology in Collaboration with Oman Society of Ultrasound in Medicine.
  3. Lead a team from Ministry of Health, Royal Hospital and Khoula Hospital and in collaboration with Oman Society of obstetrics and Gynecology with the support of WHO to evaluate and provide support to the OBGYN team in Rustaq Hospital to provide safe gynecologic laparoscopic services. The team visited the hospital several times (2021 – 2022) during which identified inter-departmental collaboration opportunities, provided technical support on equipment and surgical mentoring till the team was able to provide laparoscopic surgery for common gynecologic cases independently.

 

Collaboration with MOH

  1. Drs. Nihal Al Riyami & Tamima Al Dughaishi members in a working group to update guidelines for women's health care during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.
  2. Dr. Nihal AL Riyami is a member of the National Bioethics Committee.Dr. Nihal AL Riyami is chair of the scientific committee for the World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) congress
  3. Dr. Nihal AL Riyami Invited by MOH as Technical expert for the Royal Decree and Medical Bylaws related to Termination of Pregnancy

  5. Dr. Tamima Al-Dughaishi & Dr. Nihal AL Ryiami nominated as members in the national MOH antenatal guidelines committee, Dec,2022.
  6. Dr. Tamima Al-Dughaishi nominated as a member in the national perinatal mortality review committee, Dec, 2022. 
  7. Nomination of Drs. Tamima & Rahma Al Haddabi as a member in working group specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Ministry of Health.
  8. Dr. Rahma Al Haddabi attended the World Breastfeeding Week from 1st to 7th August 2022.
  9. Inviting members of a working group to supervise the implementation of the experimental phase for the expansion of the newborn screening program, the meeting was attended by Dr. Rahma Al Haddabi.

Collaboration with OMSB

  1. Drs. Tamima Al Dughaishi & Rahma Al Haddabi was attended the OMSB Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Training Program final in Training Assessment Report that was held on May 25, 2022.

  1. Highlights / Achievement of The YEAR 2022: Lean Project implementation Same Day
    1. Surgery Cervical cerclage including Dr. Lamya AL Kharusi & Dr Mayesa Tagaldin. This is important to shorten hospital stay and patient satisfaction and a project that will continue and expand with time.
    2. Dr. Nihal AL Riyami Reviewed several fellowship and residency training programs as a member of the Accreditation Graduate Medical Education- International (ACGME-I), USA. Meetings conducted in January, May and July 2022.
    3. Dr. Nihal AL Riyami Recognition award for outstanding performance as a member of the hospital research committee at SQUH day, 6 February.
    4. Dr. Maha Al Khaduri: Winning Sultan Qaboos University Hospital research day award, 6 February 2022 for oral presentation “Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Candidate Gene Variants in Arab women”.
    5. Dr. Dina Al Balushi organized the Obstetric Ultrasound Training on 13th and 17th February 2022 as she is a National Trainer for the Ultrasound in Obs/Gyn in Oman.
    6. Dr. Maryam Al Shukri was a visiting consultant at AL Rustaq Hospital on 31st March 2022 for advanced laparoscopy.
