Student Teaching:
Undergraduate Clinical Programmes
The main objective of the course run by the Department is to introduce medical students to ophthalmology and to provide them with core information which will allow them to recognise, diagnose and manage common diseases of the eye and the adnexa. Particular emphasis is laid on awareness of the most frequent blinding diseases and the largely preventable and curable disorders of the eye, such as cataracts, glaucoma, trachoma, diabetic retinopathy, trauma and congenital anomalies.
Pre-clerkship Programme
In the preclerkship programme, the Department teaches modules of ocular disorders to 12–14 medical students per session for two days a week for nine weeks every year, followed by a clinical examination. The students are exposed to different clinical cases in the Eye Clinic and encouraged to examine and present the cases. They also need to keep a record of clinical and practical skills learned during their rotation in a log book and in their electronic patient record.
Junior Clerkship Programme
In the junior clerkship programme, students are divided into two groups, spending seven working days in SQUH and eight working days in Al-Nahda Hospital. During the first half of their rotation, they have five modules on the following topics: red eye, trauma, visual loss, diplopia and pupillary reactions. In the second half, the students rotate again in the Department, but by then they should have completed five modules and only necessary revisions are made.
Postgraduate Programme
The residency programme in ophthalmology was launched in 2009 under the umbrella of the Oman Medical Specialty Board. The most important theoretical courses offered to residents are: Paediatric Ophthalmology; Corneal External Disease; Retinal Diseases; Optics & Refraction; Neuro-Ophthalmology; Glaucoma; Cataracts; Oculoplastic Procedures; Uveitis; and Phacoemulsification (short course).
