The Arts Credit Programme provides English for students at the College of Arts.  These students study their major subjects through the medium of Arabic.  The programme offers four courses.  Lanc1012 (General English for Arts I) and Lanc1013 (General English for Arts II) are offered in the first year, and each carry 3 credits.  Lanc1014 and 1015 (General English for Arts III and IV) each carry 2 credits. Each course must be successfully completed before a student can move on to the next. To facilitate the students’ progress in their academic study plan, all the four courses are offered every semester. The students currently require 10 credits in English as part of their degree programme.

 Courses

 LANC1012/LANC1013

The students receive 6 hours of instruction a week on an integrated skills course. The majority of the students enter at false beginner level.  The aim of the first two courses (1012 and 1013) is therefore to build on this level in order to provide a solid foundation in English. It provides coverage of the basic grammatical and lexical systems of English, combined with extensive practice of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Materials

The materials used are NewHeadway Elementary including audio and video. Additional supplementary materials at elementary level and graded readers are also used.

 LANC1014/LANC1015

In the second year, the students take Lanc1014 and 1015.  These courses are at a pre-intermediate level. The time allotted is 4 hours a week.  These are also integrated skills courses but the focus is primarily on developing the students’ communicative skills.

Materials

The material currently used is Clockwise Pre-Intermediate Classbook. Additional supplementary materials at Pre-Intermediate level are also used. The plan is to use Language in Use pre-intermediate starting in Fall 2003.

Lanc1014 and 1015 both have a mid-semester and a final and two oral tests together with a continuous assessment in speaking.  The students are required to give a presentation as a final speaking test in Lanc1015.

 Students

The number of students in the programme increases every academic year. For example, the total number of students in the academic year 2001/2002 was 650. The number increased to 670 in fall 2002 and is expected to increase by Fall 2003. The number of students in a section in Lanc1012/ Lanc1013 is between 20-23, but in Lanc1014 and Lanc1015 the number is lower to accommodate the required speaking component.
