SQU and NUST Host Medical Students Regional Meeting

06 Feb, 2025 | Return|

The College of Medicine and Health Sciences at SQU and the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) are hosting the 21st regional meeting of medical students in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR21) of the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA). Over 450 students from more than 18 countries are attending the event in Oman.

Hind bint Yousef Al Baluchi, head of the organising committee and a sixth-year student at NUST, stated that Oman’s selection to host the event, represented by the Medical Students’ Society of Oman (MedSCO), followed a competitive selection process. She emphasised that this is a strategic opportunity to highlight Oman’s leadership in medicine regionally and internationally, while fostering knowledge exchange, medical collaboration, and youth empowerment. The event also aims to inspire future leaders in healthcare and promote sustainable solutions to local and global challenges.

Al Baluchi added that hosting the event enhances Oman’s global presence by facilitating youth participation in international forums, fostering cultural exchange, and building strategic ties with delegates from over 18 countries. She noted that this could pave the way for larger future events, such as the IFMSA General Assembly. The meeting enjoys the support of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and the Ministry of Health and features contributions from prominent organisations, including the WHO and the CDC MENA, whose representatives will participate in discussions and dialogue sessions.

The event provides Omani youth with opportunities to develop leadership, organisational, and public engagement skills. It also offers training for future internationally certified trainers under the IFMSA framework. The programme includes general sessions, workshops, and training on topics such as non-communicable diseases, adolescent health, and mental health, alongside research competitions and exhibitions showcasing medical projects and initiatives.

Established in 2006, MedSCO represents medical students at SQU and NUST and is an active member of IFMSA. It aims to empower Omani youth with the expertise, skills, and values needed for leadership in the healthcare sector, while serving both the medical community and society at large.
