Established in 1987, the Department of English Language, Literature and Translation offers courses in  three areas for students majoring in English Language and Literature in the College of Arts and for students in the College of Education who specialize in English Language and English Language Teaching. In 2001 the Department began offering a four-year degree programme in Translation and in 2006 a post-graduate Diploma/M.A. in this field.

With student-centered teaching a priority, teaching methods include lectures, presentations, class-discussions, group and pair work, supervised research , written assignments, and the use of the Department’s laboratories—the multimedia laboratory, the phonetics laboratory and the translation laboratory.

In addition to teaching, Department members participate regularly in other activities like in-house seminars, research, publication in respected academic journals, and attendances at conferences around the world. In recent years, Department faculty members have presented papers at conferences in the UAE, Bahrain, Holland, Jordan, India, France, Spain, Ireland, South Africa, Hong Kong, Cyprus, Jordan, Germany, Japan, the UK and the USA.

English Major students actively participate in extra-curricular activities and become members of the English Society which focuses on developing the linguistic and literary skills of students through a series of courses and workshops.

Graduating students may pursue post-graduate studies which could lead to a career in academe (several former students are already teaching in the Department and several others are pursuing post-graduate studies overseas) or else to a career  in a wide variety of fields such as commerce, management, teaching, translation, the Civil Service, journalism and the media.
