Assistant Dean Message

College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) is committed to achieve the mission of Sultan Qaboos University and its strategy of excellence in the fields of postgraduate studies and scientific research. CASS draws together disciplines central to understanding humanity’s cultures, societies, institutions and environments. The College houses world-leading expertise across numerous fields. CASS is proud of its regional reputation for outstanding research, and commitment to a collaborative and interdisciplinary culture as well as vibrant academic environment.

CASS aspires to quality and excellence in the field of scientific research through expanding its research productivity in journal articles, authored books, and conference papers. Several national bodies include college  academic representatives.

College of Arts and Social Sciences at the Sultan Qaboos University would like to develop Research Groups to foster academic excellence by promoting high-impact research in innovative areas of relevance to Sultanate of Oman and the Arab Region to increase research publications and collaborations. Research Groups provide a platform for faculty members with intersecting interests to exchange ideas and develop research initiatives.



The statistics indicate a steady growth in the number and type of research activities in the College over the last few years. There is a wide and continuous demand for participation in regional and international conferences. Researchers also receive internal and external funding and grants to conduct strategic research of a high quality. Researchers at the College also provide research consultancy to local and foreign institutions.

The College currently offers one higher diploma program in Medical Librarianship. It offers twelve programs at the MA level in Arabic Language and Literature, Translation, Sociology, Social Work, Library and Information Studies, Journalism, Geography, History, Archaeology, Tourism and Strategic Studies for National Security and Defence and three doctoral programs in Arabic Language and Literature, History, and Information Studies. The College regularly reviews these programs to ensure their quality and value. Various programs of the College have obtained accreditation from prestigious international institutions. The College attaches great importance to the study of the possibility of building new master's and doctorate programs in additional disciplines.

Employee Training:


An employee is entitled to receive training from their employer as a form of reward, whether external or internal, through the Center for Human Resources Development, after being nominated by the college.


Training of Academic, Administrative, and Technical Staff:


The college offers several workshops to train its staff on the latest available methods in the fields of teaching, learning, research, and community service.

Students training is divided into two types:

1. Mandatory Training

Mandatory training is offered within the student's study plan and is divided into internal and external training.

1.1. Internal Training


This is offered within the departments' study plans, where the student is trained in governmental, private, and civil institutions within the Sultanate. The current departments in which field training is mandatory are:

  • English Language.

  • Sociology and Social Work.

  • Media.

  • Information Studies.

  • Tourism.

  • Geography

2.1. External Training


Departments that offer a mandatory field training course are entitled to train a number of their students outside the Sultanate if these departments deem it necessary. The departments with external training are:

  • Tourism.

  • Media.

  • Geography.

2. Voluntary Training

Voluntary training is based on the student's desire to make use of their free time and their keenness to gain professional experience that benefits them. This training takes place within the Sultanate, in governmental, private, and civil institutions.

The Office of the Assistant Dean for Training and Community Service seeks to serve the community by coordinating with the University's Community Service and Continuing Education Center regarding the organization of courses and workshops offered by the college to the local community.

A- Holding free general and specialized lectures that address various community issues and needs.

B- Communicating with various social care institutions and providing advice and insight on matters related to the college's area of expertise.
