Vision of the Department of Music and Musicology Undergraduate Program

The Department of Music and Musicology strives, through its rigorous bi-musical program, to provide excellent education in music and musicology through fostering a setting that provides educational experience with a wide range of practical, historical, and theoretical perspectives guided by a diverse international faculty.

 

Mission of the Department of Music and Musicology Undergraduate Program

The Department of Music and Musicology program is committed to academic excellence, integrity, and discipline through the provision of a setting that promotes creative and critical thinking in parallel with artistic and communication skills as well as freedom of expression in parallel with social responsibility.

Objectives of the Department of Music and musicology Undergraduate Program

  1. Develop knowledge and skills of aural perception and sight singing including harmony and part writing techniques from a variety of periods.
  2. Develop skills and an understanding of analysis and composition of music in a variety of styles, periods, and genres in both eastern Arabic and European and western cultures.
  3. Develop a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Arabic and Western musical history as well as other world music systems.
  4. Develop knowledge and skills on a major instrument in addition to piano which include performance of a cross-section of the music from the repertory of instruments, the development of appropriate technical skills necessary for artistic self-expression, and the development of the ability of sight-reading.
  5. Develop performance communication skills and experience the meaning of leadership in both small and large ensembles.
  6. Prepare students for a wide range of further educational and vocational activities

The Educational Objectives are closely related to Student Outcomes. The program educational objectives describe the expected skills, knowledge, and abilities that a graduate should achieve during the initial years following graduation. Student Outcomes are statements that describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. These are related to the skills, knowledge and attitudes/behaviors that students acquire in their matriculation through the program.

Student Outcomes of the Department of Music and Musicology Undergraduate Program

  • Outcome 1: Students will demonstrate musicianship skills in both aural perception and sight singing relative to music in a variety of periods, styles and genres. They will be able to express ideas musically through vocal and instrumental performance.
  • Outcome 2: Students will demonstrate skills in the knowledge of music theory including: counterpoint, harmony, analysis and composition.
  • Outcome 3: Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of historical musical styles, compositional techniques, and performance practices of various cultures and style periods.
  • Outcome 4: Students will demonstrate a mastery of technical skills, including: Major and minor scales and modes, intervals, triads, chords, chord progressions, and learn a representative repertoire for their major instrument in addition to the mandatory piano. They will also be able to sight-read music to a satisfactory degree, as judged by their instructors.
  • Outcome 5: Students will demonstrate the knowledge and skills to the concept of collective work to achieve harmonious results in both small and large ensembles.
  • Outcome 6: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the career options available and strategies for achieving their goals.
