Tasks and Competencies of Office of the Assistant Dean for training and Community Service

The Office of the Assistant Dean for Training & Community Service was established within various colleges of the Sultan Qaboos University during the academic year, 2010-2011. This office is considered one of the most important united actions decided upon by the university, due to the importance of training students, faculty members and college staff. The social service furthermore strengthens relations between the public and the University.

1. Training:
• Heading up the training and community services committee that is responsible for planning, coordination with various people and units, and assessing the training programmes designed for students, faculty members and college staff.

• Coordinating with industrial, legal, educational, medical, agricultural and business sectors to develop good relations with them so as to create training opportunities for faculty members, students and staff.
• Coordination with both public and private training institutions in relation to obligatory and optional training for students.
• Keeping an up-to-date record of the training activities of the college, and preparing the annual report for students, faculty members and staff.
• Researching training programmes, grants, and both local and overseas contracts.
• Assessing training programmes, visiting training locations, recommending and suggesting better approaches to job preparation.
• Forecasting training trends among students, and keeping up the college up-to-date with training trends and future plans.
• Maintaining contact with training supervisors at the college to assess the obligatory and optional training provided by the college.

2. Community Service:
In addition to the above, the Office of the Assistant Dean for Training and Community Services, undertakes the following responsibilities:
• Coordinating with the Community Service and Continuous Learning Center at the university with regards to training programmes and workshops within the areas of specialization of the college.
• Designing lecture programmes which meet a range of public needs, and cover areas which the public is most interested in.
• Communicating with the various social care agencies to give advice and recommendations on controversial issues within our areas of specialization.

3. Maintaining the College web site:
The web site is considered to be the public face of the college, and it helps maintain communication with both local and overseas public. The main objective of the site is to provide scientific and academic information and to provide news about the activities and programs run at the college.

The main objectives of the site are:
• Introducing the college, its mission, vision and goals.
• Introducing the college deanship.
• Introducing areas of specialization and the sections within the college.
• Introducing the college laboratory and library services.
• Underlining the scientific research activities of the college through local and internal conferences and workshops, and through the college magazine.
