EMD-CPD (Emergency Medicine Department - Continuous Professional Development) offers a number of programs with specific learning opportunities for SQUH staff as well as outside physicians in practice and allied health care professionals. Our activities are accredited by Oman specialty board (OMSB).

Goals & Objectives

  • Aim to improve standards and upgrade medical knowledge as part of continuous professional development. We are proud to share the expertise of our EM physicians by extending activities in education. Our overall goal is to share our collective knowledge base of emergency medicine techniques

 

 

History:

  • Our First event: our very first symposium ‘Pediatric Emergency Symposium’ on 2nd February 2016, an OMSB accredited event, which was conducted as a small-scale event in Annex building,

 

College of Medical Science & Health sciences, Sultan Qaboos University that was successfully attended by 98 candidates from SQUH. This event was led by our first Organizing committee comprising Dr. Abdullah al Reesi, head of the department; Dr. Suad al abri; emergency physician

& clinical toxicologist; Dr. Vinod Abraham, emergency physician & Ms. Ayida al Hadhrami; EMD coordinator.

  • Since then we have been successful in steering 8 symposiums, 5 workshops, 1 conference & 2 exhibitions till date, gathering around

1700 candidates

  • A single day event that involves discussion on particular types of emergencies that includes lecture presentation by renown national physicians from Oman. OMSB residents also get opportunity to present latest article for discussion. These symposiums are usually being

 

conducted once per month and include invited speakers from Oman. Topics range from common topics with updated guidelines, presentation, articles to case presentation.

 

  • It is a 5 hours’ day-event comprising of ten lecture presentation, starting from 8am until 12.30pm with 30-45 min break. Around 150-200 are expected to attend. Feedback is evaluated on the basis of Speaker evaluation & online course evaluation for future improvement. Participant receive their attendance certificate through online, which is password protected. Till date we have conducted 8 symposiums, attended by approximately 1200 candidates so far

 

 

 

  • Often a single session, although some may involve multiple sessions over a period of time (e.g. once a week for four weeks, or

two full-day sessions)

 

  • Generally, involve small number of candidates, usually from 30 to 80 participants. These workshops are steered by wellexperienced highly qualified instructors in the subject under discussion that comprises of lecture presentations followed by hands on practical sessions. Our aim is to provide hands on experience & interactive sessions.

 

  • So far we had conducted 5 workshops on:

o Airway o Decontamination o Urological emergencies o Interactive ECG workshop o Clinical research workshop

 

 

 

 

  1. Scheduled once a year, over the span of 2-3 days. It also includes preconference workshops

 

& exhibitions, abstract submissions etc. We invite highly reputed speakers & instructors from abroad

EMS Prehospital Care Conference 2016, in association with Public authority for Civil Defense, 10-11 October 2016, at SQU Conference hall, inaugurated by Chief guest: H.E. Hilal Al Sabthi Conferences included Preconference workshops on Airway & Decontamination There were 31 stations showcased Exhibits from PACDA, SQUH emergency medicine paramedics & nursing staff  The conference gathered approx.280 participants from all over Oman. BOARD REVIEW COURSES: A 4-day course with intense revision materials Steered by Highly Qualified Well Experienced Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physicians Designed for revision for emergency medicine board exams. These are scheduled once every year targeting 30-50 emergency physicians & residents from Oman & GCC countries. Highly recommended course for preparing for Arab Board & equivalent Qualifying exams by extensive refreshing review of EM specialty.

 

Team work led by physicians, residents, nurses, paramedics intended for prevention, awareness, latest updates by exhibits abstracts, posters articles, live model demonstrations, simulations.

 

  • Conducted in association with conferences, symposium and also conjure in with another departments.

 

  • Following are list of exhibitions conducted by EMD CPD committee

 

  1. EMS pre hospital care Exhibition held in October 2016 at SQU Exhibition hall - Total no. exhibits: 31 participated by SQUH Paramedics, PACDA Paramedics, SQUH nursing & companies
  2. Pediatric accidental injuries prevention Exhibition held in November 2016 at SQUH main entrance– showcased 20 exhibits targeting to provide awareness among school children, public
  3. Conducted Exhibition in conjure with FAMCO medical awareness campaign targeting university students.

 

 

 

  • Advertisement: by publishing poster through track care, HIS, emails, other hospitals, social media

  • Speakers / instructors: Invite reputed speakers from OSEM, OMA, Oman & GCC countries. We also provide opportunity for

present articles by OMSB Emergency residents

 

  • Venues- Nursing college auditorium- SQU; annex building, College of medicine & health science-SQU; clinical skills lab SQU; Medical lecture Theatre- SQU

 

  • Refreshments: Snacks +/- Lunch provided. Included in course fees.

 

  • Payment & fees: mostly onsite, bank transfer receipts

  • Evaluation: one of the ways in which we improve future events are through analyzing our participants’ honest feedback. Speaker evaluation usually completed onsite while Course evaluation is provided online to candidates through SQU website.

 

  • Upon successful completion or attendance of the course, each participant is provided certificate as hard copy or electronically.

 

Participants are eligible to freely access PDF lecture materials through website after every courses.
