About Anesthesia Department

Anaesthesia Department was founded by Dr. Nils Evjen of Norway in 1989 when the college of Medicine was established. Twenty years down the line the department has been a platform for many educational and professional progress. Anaesthesia department is now headed by Dr. Ali Al Abady, Senior Consultant and Pain Specialist. Dr. Nasser Al Kemyani is the Assistant Head of the department. We have an excellent team of highly competent, skilled and dedicated anaesthetists and intensivists providing anaesthesia services of superlative quality. Department comprises of 36 doctors , 8 Respiratory Therapists 2 Anaesthesia technicians and 2 administrative staff. The department strives to ensure that quality clinical services are provided for our patients.

Services

The Department caters to an entire range of services, Clinical Anaesthesia for all Specialties, Critical care and Pain management, Remote Location care and Life Support, ECMO , Critical care Out reach , Cath lab procedures, Interventional pain procedures, Transport of patients, Graduate and Post-Grad training, Clinical Research, Out-patient Clinics for PAC and Pain therapy, Training Courses for staff , Nursing and EMS Training, Quality and RISK audits, Administrative Committees and more.

Department is actively involved in teaching, development of curriculum and conducting exams for Pre-clerkship, Junior and Senior clerkship students. Junior students are given orientation about pre anaesthetic assessment, general and regional anaeshesia, airway management , IV cannulation and shock during one week rotation in the OR. Senior Students get oriented about identification of critically ill patients and monitoring. They learn about management of Respiratory failure, Cardiac failure, unconscious patient, shock, ethics and brain dead patients.

In the last five years, an average of 7200 cases were done per year inclusive of Paediatric Adult elective and emergency cases. Average mortality rate in OR for last 5 years is 0.05 %.

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at our hospital is an 11-bed state of the art critical care area. Over the last 2-3 years, Intensivists and Anesthesiologists with special interest in critical care are managing the unit. In 2019, our ICU admitted a total of 424 patients with an average of 35 cases per month. The average length of stay was 9 days. 31 of the severely ill cases received ECMO.

Department is also involved in several research activities on topics like Post operative delirium and Ultrasound guided radial artery cannulation. Recently undergraduate students have been involved in departmental research projects and they are guided by excellent and competent anaesthesiologist from the department. We have also introduced off hours Off hours Obstetric Anesthesia coverage, evening shift Orthopaedic and ENT Coverage, Pre Anaesthesia Clinic,MRI Pre-Anesthesia Clinic for children , ECMO Team, Critical Care Outreach Team.

As a team we are working towards the realization of the departments vision and mission with the aim to ensure better and improvised care for the people of Oman.
