About Clinical Nutrition

The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics (Clinical Nutrition Section) is a leading department that integrates primarily both nutrition and dietetics, providing evidence-based, patient-centered nutritional consultations and therapy to a wide range of in-patients and out-patients at SQUH. Nutrition is the study of nutrients in food, how nutrients are used by the body and the relationship between diet, health and disease. Dietetics is defined as ‘the application of the science of nutrition to the human being in health and disease‘. Dietitians are qualified health professionals who are trained to assess, diagnose and treat nutritional problems by promoting nutritional well-being through the medical nutrition therapy (care) process to manage nutritional problems in relation to disease conditions at an individual and wider public-health level.
