Cardiology Unit:
The cardiology unit provides comprehensive range of specialized diagnostic, therapeutic, and interventional services for patients with all spectrum of cardiac diseases. The unit has a well-equipped catheterization laboratory (Cath Lab) with facilities for all coronary interventions. The unit also has a well-developed structural heart disease program offering a wide range of advanced interventional services. Trans catheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) is performed with the cardiothoracic surgery team. The unit offers electrophysiological services such as arrhythmia ablation, implantation of pacemakers and Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICD). Our outpatient practice is comprised of general cardiology and specialized clinics such as structural heart disease, arrhythmias, and pacemaker clinics. A wide range of diagnostic services are available. These include echocardiography, Exercise tolerance test (ETT), 24-48h Holter monitoring and 24hrs BP monitoring, which are done in the clinical physiology. Similarly, radio nucleotide studies, CT-Cardiac, Cardiac MRI and PET scan are done in the Radiology Department.
Endocrinology Unit:
We provide a wide range of inpatient and outpatient clinical services covering all aspects of endocrinology. Such services include diabetes and thyroid disease including thyroid cancer in addition to bone, pituitary, adrenal, gonadal and fertility disorders. We also offer radioactive isotopes for thyroid and other disorders.
Gastroenterology Unit:
The gastroenterology unit manages a wide range of diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, liver, and gall bladder. The unit is linked to a fully equipped endoscopy unit doing more than 3000 endoscopic procedures annually. The routine procedures include upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, trans-nasal endoscopies, colonoscopy, polypectomy, and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube insertion. Our unit is fully equipped to do advanced procedures such as: Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiography and Pancreatography (ERCP), Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic mucosal resection, gastrocystostomy and enteral and biliary self-expanding metal stenting. We run outpatient specialty clinics for inflammatory bowel disease and liver transplantation.
Infectious Diseases Unit:
Complex infections are becoming a major challenge among hospitalized patients. Infections in immunocompromised hosts, hospital acquired infections caused by multidrug resistant pathogens, and emerging infections such as COVID-19 are examples. The infectious diseases unit at Sultan Qaboos University is well-established service, first at a national level, possessing a remarkable depth and breadth of clinical expertise and is well complemented by a modern diagnostic microbiology laboratory. Our unit has proudly provided high quality care to patients with HIV in Oman for nearly three decades, has traditionally been central to address challenges of infectious diseases in Oman, particularly for under recognized infectious diseases and emerging infections, and has always been a national resource of expertise in all fields of infectious diseases. Our clinical services are largely consultation based and cover the full range of infectious diseases practices. We have a well-established, once a week, HIV clinic in addition to general infectious diseases clinic with disease ranging through the entire spectrum of pathogens.
General Medicine Unit:
General medicine unit provides patient-centered clinical care to large number of hospitalized patients with a wide range of diseases. This care is delivered in a teaching environment and defined by comprehensive approach with a multidisciplinary care setting. Patients with multiple and complex medical ailments are typically admitted under our care. Other aspects of clinical care delivered by our unit include inpatient medical consultations, once a week outpatient medical clinic, emergency medicine consultation, and liaison with other health facilities to optimize care for patients with chronic, complex, and multiple medical conditions.
Neurology Unit:
Neurology unit is one of the major referral services in Oman. Our unit encompasses most of the neurology subspecialties such as epilepsy, stroke, multiple sclerosis, movement disorders and behavioral neurology. Our specialty services are backed by state of the art neuroradiology, neurophysiology, neuroimmunology, neuropathology and neurogenetics sections in the hospital. In addition to the general neurology outpatient clinics, we run separate clinics for Epilepsy, Memory disorders, Botox clinic, Vascular Neurology, Multiple Sclerosis and Movement Disorders. We have facilities to do Electroencephalography (EEG), Long term EEG monitoring (LTEM), Electromyography (EMG), Nerve conduction study (NCS), Evoked potential study (EPS) and Trans cranial Doppler Ultrasound
Nephrology Unit:
Nephrology unit provides inpatient and outpatient care to the entire spectrum of Kidney disease. We run specialty clinics for Glomerulonephritis and Living donor Kidney transplantation. Kidney Biopsy, Inpatient dialysis and Preparation for dialysis access are the routine procedures carried out in the unit.
Oncology Unit:
Medical Oncology unit is fortunate to have a competent team of clinicians, nurses and other staff who are committed to improving the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of wide range of adult solid malignancies. The unit provides state-of-the-art care in a multidisciplinary team-based approach to many aspects of cancer treatment, including targeted therapeutics, chemotherapy, hormonal therapies, and immunotherapy. The unit cares for patients with early stage and late stages of cancer. Also, it provides a multidisciplinary team-based approach in palliative care.
Pulmonology Unit:
Pulmonology unit is one of the major referral services in Oman. Patients with chronic pulmonary conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, interstitial lung diseases, and bronchiectasis receive the most advanced care. The unit performs diagnostic services including fiberoptic bronchoscopy and related procedures (bronchoalveolar lavage, endobronchial biopsy, transbronchial biopsy, and transbronchial needle aspiration). Procedures including pleural aspiration, closed pleural biopsy, intercostal chest tube drain and pleurodesis are routinely done. The unit offers advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures jointly with interventional radiology, thoracic surgery, and intensivists. We have access to an advanced pulmonary function laboratory in clinical physiology and we support the sleep lab where polysomnography and portable sleep studies are done.
Rheumatology Unit:
The unit of rheumatology provides total care for all rheumatology related disorders and is a major referral service. We share care with other disciplines for autoimmune diseases patients with pregnancy, renal diseases, respiratory diseases, vascular problems, and orthopedic issues. Joint injections, soft tissues injections, and nerve blocks are done during clinics. We provide daycare services for the provisions of biologicals and chemotherapeutics. We have facilities for Radioactive Yttrium joint injections. The diagnostic work up is well complimented by the state of the art immunology and histopathology laboratories and advanced radiology services. Physiotherapy and podiatry services of the hospital are utilized for comprehensive care.
