On the twentieth day of October, every five years - based on United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. 69/282 - the countries of the world celebrate the World Statistics Day; In order to highlight the importance and role of statistics in sustainable development and to improve the decision-making process supported by reliable statistical information. Whereas the Statistics Department at the College of Science at Sultan Qaboos University pays great attention to educating the Omani society about the importance of statistics and its role in helping decision makers to make wise decisions; The Department of Statistics at Sultan Qaboos University has decided to celebrate annually on the twentieth day of October the “Statistical Day” starting from this year.

The Statistics Department organized the “Statistical Day” event for the first time last Thursday 20/10/2022, with the participation of delegates from the National Center for Statistics and Information, the Statistics and Information Department at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, the University’s Department of Planning and Statistics, and from the private sector, Afaq Statistical Consulting Company.

The event included some presentations by the participants about their experiences and expertise in the field of statistical data analysis. The mechanism of work of the Statistics and Information Department at the University Hospital was presented through brochures on the tasks of the Statistics Department in the hospital and scientific posters of various studies related to job satisfaction for hospital employees and the annual statistical indicators of hospital medical departments. Attendees were also introduced to the hospital's statistical yearbook.

Afaq for Statistical Consulting has presented a "research platform", which aims to bring together experts in research, statistical analysis, data science and artificial intelligence with employers in a digital form to produce solid scientific studies and save time and effort for experts and employers. The National Center for Statistics and Information discussed the center's work mechanism in linking the data of institutions and bodies to ensure continuous updating of digital indicators and statistics on the center's website. The Department of Planning and Statistics at Sultan Qaboos University participated in digital posters for the annual report of the university and the statistical bulletin for the year 2021. The ceremony also included a practical application of some statistical experiments in sampling science, in which the male and female students of the Statistics Department participated in their implementation.
