Program Name: MS.c. in Data Science and Machine Learning

Program Type: Course Work and Thesis

Study Mode: Full-time Or Part-time

Duration: 2 Years for Full-time and 3 Years for Part-time

Program Description:

The student should complete the course work requirements specified in the degree plan with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00. For the thesis, the candidate is required to conduct the necessary literature review, address the research problem, discuss and analyze the results, write the report and communicate it during his/her oral MSc defense. The student should define the research problem in tight collaboration with his/her supervisor, which usually occurs in the second semester. The student should register for the
thesis in the third semester after having completed at least 12 credits of the course work.

Admission Requirements:

1. Applicants should have a Bachelor's degree in a field related to Computing or Information Sciences such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or in other related fields from Sultan Qaboos University or from any other recognized university provided that they have sufficient background in Computing, with Cumulative Grade Point Average of not less than 2.75 on a 4 point scale, or
   • Two year’s Work experience is a must for candidates with Cumulative Grade Point Average between 2.5 and 2.74 in the Bachelor degree, or
   • Applicants who have bachelor degree from a recognized institution and a postgraduate diploma in a related specialization from a recognized institution of higher education with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4-point scale or its equivalent. 
2. All applicants should have a good background in computing, mathematics (calculus, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics), and statistics as assessed by the admission committee.
3. Candidates from other disciplines may be asked to attend additional bridging courses before starting the program.
4. Applicant must submit a release letter or a study leave from employer for full time study or no objection letter for part-time study, addressed to the dean of postgraduate studies at SQU. Un-employed applicant needs to submit a statement from The Ministry of Labour documenting the unemployment status of the applicant.

English Language Requirements

Before starting the program the admitted candidates should submit an English Proficiency Test Certificate band (6) or higher in academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic or a score of (79) or higher in the International TOEFL - IBT

Program Description:

The student should complete the course work requirements specified in the degree plan with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00. For the thesis, the candidate is required to conduct the necessary literature search, undertake the research, analyze the results, write the report, and communicate the results at an oral defense. This work need not necessarily be original research but should be a new application of ideas. The student should identify the research problem in consultation with the supervisor, which normally takes place in the second semester. The student should register for the thesis in the third semester after having completed at least 12 credits of the course work.

Admission Requirements:

Applicants should have a Bachelor from Sultan Qaboos University or from any recognized university. 

• A Cumulative Grade Point Average of not less than 2.5 out of 4 or it's equivalent in another system and the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies will make the assessment for equivalency acceptance
• Work experiences are a must for candidates with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of less than 2.75 in the Bachelor's degree

English Language Requirements

The instructional language used for both programs is in English. Before starting the program the applicant should achieve level (6) in IELTS Academic or (550) in the TOEFL paper-based or (213) in TOEFL through the computer or (79) in the TOEFL through the Internet.

There will be an entrance exam plus an interview held by the department and it can be by phone for international students if required.

Program Name: PhD in Computer Science

Program Type: By Research

Study Mode: Full-time

Duration: 4 years

Program Description:

The PhD degree in computer science is research-based. The program is open for full-timers and the normal study period will last for four years. A maximum of 9 credits of course work may be required when a candidate has not taken any previous postgraduate level courses or when a course is important for his/her research work..

The research interest of the faculty members of the department spans a wide range of systems the areas of an application of Computer Science. This includes parallel and distributed computing, Mobile and cellular networks, interconnection networks, networks on chip, performance analysis and evaluation of computer and communication systems, multimedia and image processing, intelligent systems, E-learning and E-services, databases and XML, software engineering, software testing, web services, service-oriented software development, computer graphics, complexity and theory of computation, and many others.

Admission Requirements:

The applicant should have a master's degree from Sultan Qaboos University, or from any recognized university.

• A Cumulative Grade Point Average of not less than 3.00 on a 4.00 scale or equivalent in any other system and the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies will make the assessment for equivalency acceptance.

• The applicant must be a full-time student for 4 years.

• A statement of the objectives and goals of the research proposed.

• Three recommendation letters, at least two from academic to show competence in the discipline of interest and research capability.
