The Charter of the Sultan Qaboos University states that one of the University’s objectives is “to uphold scientific research as the most effective tool in establishing accurate facts, problem solving and the prediction of social patterns as well as undertaking research in the fields of technology in relation to the Omani environment, in particular, and other environments, in general, in order to enhance the intellectual capabilities and quality of life of mankind as a whole and of Omani society in particular.”

The basic mission of our office is to administer postgraduate education and research in the College of Engineering, to enhance the strength and vitality of engineering research by identifying new opportunities, developing collaborations and establishing partnerships between faculty, industry, and government units.

The backbone of research is our postgraduate students under the guidance of our highly qualified faculty members. We strive to assist our postgraduate students in their academic life by guiding them through their degree plans and providing them with guidelines needed for the smooth completion of their studies in due time.
I hope the information available in our web site will be helpful to our current as well as our future students and researchers.  We will be glad to receive feedback and comments from our alumni, current and future students, faculty members, researchers and our partners in the industry.  There is always a room for improvement. 

 

The College of Engineering offers nine M.Sc. and six Ph.D. programs as listed below. The details of all programs can be found under the department, which offers the program.

Postgraduate programs offered by Civil and Architectural Engineering department include:

  1. M.Sc. in Civil Engineering,

Appended below is a brief description about the postgraduate programs and expertise available in all departments.

Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering

The Ph.D. program in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering comprises mainly of a supervised research focused on preparation of dissertation, including literature review, research, data collection and analysis, and writing. The dissertation must be a significant contribution to knowledge in the research area, demonstrating the student's ability to conduct independent and original research and to communicate the results of the research through a coherent, integrated, and mature document.  Candidates must register on a full time basis.  Whilst there is no general course work component, the dissertation committee may specify certain requirements such as coursework if deemed necessary for the candidate’s successful completion of his/her dissertation.

The Department of Civil & Architectural Engineering offer four different types of M.Sc. programs in the areas of Civil, Civil (Water Resources), Environmental, and Geomatics Engineering. The programs comprises of 24 credits of course work and a thesis on current/emerging research areas in the discipline undertaken by the student.

The faculty in the Department covers a broad spectrum of expertise in the various disciplines of civil and architectural engineering. Broad areas of research include structures; traffic, highway and transportation engineering; hydraulics and hydrology; geotechnical engineering; environmental engineering; Urban design, planning and management; remote sensing and GIS; etc.

The laboratories and workshops in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering are furnished with high quality up-to-date equipment capable of conducting experimental work for both teaching and research purposes. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering offers a doctoral program for full-time students that should be normally completed within four years. Prospective Ph.D. students must have a M.Sc. degree from a recognized higher education institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4-point scale or equivalent in the master’s program. PhD candidates are required to produce a dissertation containing original work of suitable merit to demonstrate their command of the relevant research methodology and their ability to undertake independent research. The dissertation should make a significant contribution to the body of knowledge in the specific area of research.

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering offer one M.Sc. program with four tracks of specialization in ‘Communications and Signal Processing’, ‘Computer Systems & Networks’, ‘Power Systems and Energy’, and ‘Electronic Instrumentation & Control’. The programs comprises of 24 credits of course work and a thesis on current/emerging research areas in the discipline undertaken by the student.

The ECE Department has 35 faculty members with 5 Professors, 12 Associate Professors and 18 Assistant Professors. The major areas of research in the Department include Communications & Signal Processing (CSP), Computer Systems and Networks (CSN), Power Systems and Energy (PSE), and Electronic Instrumentation and Control (EIC). Research interests of our faculty members cover  a wide range of topics including Communication Systems, Power System Planning, Artificial Intelligence, Power System Protection, Computer Engineering, Power Electronics & Electric Drives, Electronics, Electrical Machines, Digital, Systems and Signals, Power System Dynamic & Control, Database Systems, Power System Analysis, Sensor Systems & Networks, Data Transmission, Control, Robotics & Automation, Network, Security, High Voltage Engineering, Image and Video Processing, Power Electronics, Networking and Security, and Renewable Energies.

Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering

The Ph.D. programs in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering presents a distinctive opportunity for the training of graduate students toward the completion of their doctoral degree in Industrial or Mechanical Engineering. It is a full-time study that is a research based and is open to both local and international graduate students. The objective of the program is to help the Ph.D. students to develop their ability to contribute to the advancement of science and engineering through creative research in various fields of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. These programs aim to provide doctoral students with the necessary educational environment on how to use the scientific and engineering principles and tools in research in the field of Mechanical or Industrial Engineering. The focus is to address the upcoming local, regional and global challenges, expand existing knowledge base, and design and build the enterprise of the future. The thesis is the primary component of the Ph.D. program and the result of a Ph.D. student's research. The research must lead to an original and significant contribution to knowledge in a subject field, and be fully reported in the thesis document. Department of Petroleum and Chemical Engineering

The Department of Petroleum and Chemical Engineering (PCE) offers two full-time PhD programs, one in Petroleum Engineering and the other in Chemical Engineering. The programs comprises of 24 credits of course work and a thesis on current/emerging research areas in the discipline undertaken by the student.

The PCE Department has 18 faculty members with 6 Associate Professors and 12 Assistant Professors. Research interests of our faculty members cover a wide range of topics including drilling and well completion, enhanced oil recovery, formation evaluation, geology, rock mechanics and rock engineering, production engineering, reservoir engineering, reservoir simulation, reactor analysis and kinetics, catalysis, transport processes and multiphase flow and mixing, process control, chemistry & rheology of oil, pollution prevention, supercritical extraction, separation processes, applications of expanded graphite, polymer engineering and industrial waste treatment.

The Department has a vast array of research equipment from instrumental analysis equipment (GC, ICP, TOC, etc.) to high technology measuring devices (rheometer, state of art high pressure and temperature core flood equipment, formation damage, PVT, etc.) to pilot plant test rigs (oil-water flow loop, steam rig, etc). The department is currently hosting major research projects in formation damage, polymer technology, microbial enhanced oil recovery, multiphase flow in pipelines, oil-field souring mitigation and in-situ upgrading of Omani heavy oil. For further information, please contact us at engpce@squ.edu.om.

Graduation Statistics for Last Ten Years

The College of Engineering started four postgraduate programs at M.Sc. level in 1998. These programs were offered only in part-time mode. During the subsequent years, the College added another six new programs at M.Sc. level.  The latest approved MSC program is A Master Program in Architectural Engineering that will be offered starting the Fall Semester of 2018.

In 2009, the College has taken another step towards postgraduate studies by offering doctoral programs in six disciplines along with an option to pursue all M.Sc. programs in full-time or part-time mode. Currently, the college offers ten M.Sc. and six Ph.D. programs through four departments. For all offered programs, the student has to submit a thesis to complete his/her studies.
