An overview of Undergraduate Studies Program (BA)

Since its inauguration, the Department of Art Education offers a single programme, the Bachelor’s degree in Art Education. The programme prepares Art Education teachers to teach fine arts in Basic and Post-Basic Education schools. Students practice creativity in drawing, photography, ceramics, printing, textile, the basics of designing and printing, sculpture, use of different materials, graphic design, jewellery making and silverware, and Omani traditional crafts. In order for student teachers to possess competencies which enable them to teach these subjects, they also study various educational courses (e.g. Curriculum and Methods of Teaching, Educational Psychology, Foundations of Education, and Instructional Technology). These are supplemented by practice in labs and microteaching sessions. Besides, they do teaching practice in Basic and Post-Basic education schools across the Sultanate.

The Department admits General Diploma students who are eligible to join the major as per the admission system which provides equal opportunities to all applicants. To be enrolled in the Art Education major, a candidate must:

  • Get a minimum grade of 'C' in: Basic Arabic Language, Fine Arts, Basic English.
  • Pass the Art Ability Test and Vision Test (colour blindness) as basic requirements.

 Students enrolled in this program must complete (125) credit hours distributed as follows:

  • University requirements:         (12 credit hours)
  • Major requirements:                (102 credit hours)
  • Major electives:                        (11 credit hours)

Contemporary Visual Arts (UE) : ARED1001
This course is a comprehensive introduction to the concept of art. It explores the main catalysts of modern art, the main styles and schools of art, and its pioneers, importance, and features. This course also introduces the elements and principles of art and their importance in the visual arts through exploring some historical and modern artistic practices. It also highlights how art, through the use of mixed-waste products, can serve educational, cultural, and social values. This course trains students to comprehend various styles of visual art in order to interact with and appreciate these styles.

 

Appreciation of Islamic Arts and Arabic calligraphy: ARED1002
This course offers an introduction to selected models of Islamic art and Arabic orthography employed in buildings, furniture, and manuscripts. The course also deals with ways of using and employing them in the Omani traditional manual arts with an emphasis on developing the patterns to create contemporary artistic innovations derived from the original Islamic decorative arts and Arabic orthography.

 

Contemporary Visual Arts (UE): ARED1110
This course discusses the foundations and principles of formative drawing, learn about various raw materials used in. drawing such as pencil, ink and charcoal, grasp the techniques and process of art in paintings, understand and demonstrate the role of raw materials in the show touching different visual analysis techniques in show business in form of two-dimensional work of three-dimensional format, displaying the rules of perspective.
Introduction to Art Education and its theories: ARED1120
Students are expected, after completing this course, to recognize the goals of art education, its stages of development, areas and fields. Gather more knowledge of some basic concepts in art, education and art education. Identify the philosophy of the preparation of art education teachers. Introduce the child art artistic development and characteristics. Improve the students’ artistic vision by providing theoretical and practical knowledge. Introduce the other Art Education disciplines.

 

Introduction to Art Education and Theories: ARED2120
CUTM ARED (1120) Introduction to Art Education and Theories The aim of this course is to introduce Art Education to students and to acquaint them with its different domains. Content areas include the concept of Art Education and related terms and disciplines. They also include its functions in society in general and in education in particular. The course presents the most important theories and studies of Art Education and the effect of Art Education on understanding children's artistic behavior. The course also includes preliminary practical applications to be a basis for further deeper ones in future

 

Child's Art: ARED2240
The course aims to introduce the child art in its various aspects such as the schematic development in all stages of children’s artistic growth and its characteristic in each stage. This course focuses in the relationship between the child’s artistic growth and the development of his social life, cognitive and the creativity. It is provide educational methods of teaching art for talents and special needs children.

 

Art Education for Special Needs: ARED4140
This course aims to introduce art education to special needs, to identify the special needs and types of society, to identify the human senses and their positive and negative impact on the human being, and to learn about human behavior and the role of art education and its effectiveness towards owners of special needs and the extent of the influence on them.

 

History of Ancient Arts & Civilizations: ARED1230
History of Ancient Arts & Civilizations course includes studies of the forms of expression of the visual arts of painting, sculpture, architecture and crafts, And other technical products. Since the beginnings of primitive art in the Middle Ages, Ancient Egyptian Art, Mesopotamian, Greek art, Romania, the art of medieval times and in the Renaissance. The focus will be on the analysis of the original artwork of various interpretations, Special based upon its intended use, and role in a particular society. The course aims to know the characteristics of General technical and unique artistic and aesthetic values of each work of art.

 

History of Islamic Art: ARED2250
History of Islamic Art course, visual arts survey study of architecture, decoration, applied arts and photography, the focus will be on works of art that reflect the impact of Islamic culture. Course includes studies of the different periods since the beginnings of Islamic Art, and the era of the Umayyad, Abbasid, Fatimid, Umayyad, Seljuk, Mamluk and Ottoman. Application of study and research skills and critical thinking analysis of the different interpretations and implications, for General technical know the characteristics and Special of each work of art, It aims to reach out to the judgment of aesthetics. And perception of the relationship between the culture of every age and artistic production. And acquire the skill of art criticism and artistic Appreciation of the artistic and aesthetic values, and organization and applied in other courses and practical life.

 

History of Modem and Contemporary Art: ARED3210
The course includes identifying and defining the terminology associated with modernism, and postmodernism, and the most important factors that led to the appearance the schools of modern and contemporary art. Since the nineteenth century (Neoclassicism –Romanticism- Realism –Realism- Impressionism –Post-Impressionism) and modern art in the twentieth century (Fauvism –Cubism –Futurism –Dada –Expressionism - Surrealism –Constructivism -Abstract Expressionism) Arts postmodernism (Pop-Art - Minimalism - Conceptual Art - Installation - Video art,) to compare the technical and aesthetic values in different historical periods. The course aims to identify the stylistic characteristics of the most important artists of the pioneers, and the discovery of new aesthetic standards that contributed to the construction of the language of modern and contemporary art.

 

Art Criticism and Appreciation: ARED4120
The course Art Criticism and Appreciation covers identification and definition the concepts of artistic taste. Educational Appreciation aesthetic, and the relationship between the creative and the Taster, the concept of art criticism and its relationship to aesthetic values appreciation, Preparation art critic and a comparative aesthetic judgment. Study of the philosophy of art theories of issues in aesthetics, definition, its history, and the relationship, Art aesthetic and natural aesthetic. The following three aesthetic theories apply to visual artworks (Imitationalism – Formalism - Emotionalism) Study criticism types (classical criticism - formalism criticism - contextual criticism - impressionistic criticism) Examines the relationship between criticism and art education. Course goal is to develop the skills criticism, Analytical methods for Artwork to detect the aesthetic values.

 

Critical Readings In Plastic Art: ARED4150
This advanced course aims at developing the ability to make aesthetic judgments on artworks through analysis of their expressive content and training in criticizing critical writings in local and international newspapers and magazines specialized in plastic arts
Ceramics1: ARED1130
This course aims to show aesthetic values of making pottery’s objects using different ways of clay’s hand-building techniques such as slabs, clay’s coils, coloring slips etc. Also, this course intends to teach the principles of firing process and this includes kilns’ setting, firing behavior, variables of firing’s temperatures and physical changes within the firing process especially in biscuit firing stage etc.

 

Drawing (1): ARED1210
This course aims to use drawing tools like pencil, ink and carbon for drawing, study form and elements in the steel life. Also, it study beautiful things to use dark, light, texture and traditional enviously

 

Principles Of Design: ARED1220
The aim of this course is to identify the bases and constructional rules of decorative designs, and to be acquaintance with Islamic decoration and different forms of shapes when it comes to the formation elements in the design. It also aims at know-how to deal with rainbow by fully understanding its characteristics. Moreover, the course get students acquire the skills of using colors of water interface and its different techniques.

 

Drawing (1): ARED1430

Weaving With Different Fibers: ARED2110
This course aims to identify the history of weaving in the world and Oman, learning weaving terms and the contemporary uses of fabrics. In addition, it is introduce the characteristic of fibers and their uses as well as the effect of colours in design. It focuses in acquiring hand weaving skills and techniques to be implemented in woven artworks.

 

Design Applications: ARED2130
This course aims to offering various experiences adhere to constructive rules of decorative designs. Moreover, the course draw attention on know-how these designs deals with rainbow by fully understanding their psychological and physical characteristics, and the ways to utilize these designs in order to emphasize the value of the aesthetics of artistic works. The course also touches the basic concepts and artistic components of one dimension as building constructive system achieved through innovative developed designs. Adding to that the course seeks to produce designs that have decorative characteristics with expressive values like lights, motion, and system contenting decorative painting of multiple surfaces.

 

Printmaking: ARED2210
In printmaking course, the student becomes acquainted with the basic scientific and practical terminology of the various direct and indirect techniques for printing textiles on different fabrics, as well as learning about the materials and tools used in these techniques, while preparing designs appropriate for these techniques. This course concentrates in its intensive study on applied experimentation according to the function of the printed matter, as well as on the artistic treatments of printing, with attention to the innovative aspects of integrating printing techniques, which will be reflected in the educational aspects and upgrading the aesthetic aspects of printed designs.

 

Ceramics (1): ARED2220
This course aims to show beautiful value in ceramic form from clay, shape, treatment processes, forming methods and surface different element of nature to development of cultural skills.

 

Painting (2): ARED2230
This course aims at developing students' experiences in dealing with colors, widening their intellectual approaches through diversifying the media, methods of treatment, techniques and experimentation, through reviewing distinguished world experiences in painting, so as to encourage them to search for new aesthetic variables suitable for their personalities and highlight their individuality and uniqueness.

 

Modern Panting: ARED3110
This course aims at enabling students to test and discuss modern and contemporary artworks of different cultures and periods, providing them with the language of art and the ability to practice art criticism through analysis of different modern and contemporary artworks. It also enables them to learn modern techniques and scientific methods of producing artworks of contemporary character, identify the most important trends in art such as modernism, post-modernism and contemporary art, train in producing creative works in different trends and schools of modern and contemporary art, as well as develop their ability to research and experiment in media innovated and available in nature and in the Omani environment in particular.

 

Hand Crafts: ARED3120
The course aims to give the student a comprehensive overview of the core of art-crafts applied globally or locally. Providing the student with the knowledge suits his mental abilities about the history, culture, applications, manual skills and their craft impact on education, as well as providing the student with the necessary technical skills through integrated practical applications on the origins of handicrafts and industrial, the technical methods of some arts and handicrafts applied in the Sultanate. It also aims to know the stages of its development and the progress it has reached now in order to get benefited from it in the field of art education or the preparation of small projects in the Sultanate. Examples of art industries such as crafts, metalwork, goldsmithing, woodworking, pottery, weaving and textile decoration ... etc.

 

Painting (1): ARED3140
This course aims at identifying the principles & basics of composing paintings, water-color techniques and treatments, differentiation between drawing and painting as regards the techniques & treatments used in each, as well as reviewing world experiences in water-color paintings and building the ability to produce such paintings

 

Principles of Graphic Engraving: ARED3150
In the Principles of Graphic Engraving, the student learns the scientific, practical and basic terms in the various techniques of graphic engraving, especially the technique of engraving on copper, engraving on wood, and engraving on linoleum, and this course focuses on applied experimentation according to the function of the printed matter.

 

Principles of Design: ARED3160
This course aims at presenting the constructional laws and bases of decorative designs, identifying the types of Islamic decorations, various formations of the motifs in the design, dealing with spectrum colors through a full understanding of their characteristics and students' attaining of skills of using water-based colors (gouache, acrylic and inks) and their various techniques.

 

Aesthetic of Arabic Calligraphy : ARED3170
The following course deals with several important scopes, including introduction to the various types of aesthetics of modern and classic Arabic calligraphy. The course displays integrated principles of its formative components, either Arabic fonts or their relationships with the structural foundations of decorative designs. It explains the procedures and stages of implementing multi-level decorative paintings, in addition to techniques for using watercolors and dealing with raw cardboard papers (Canson) during execution.

 

Ceramics (2): ARED3220
This course aims to show aesthetic values of making pottery’s objects using different ways of clay’s hand-building techniques such as slabs, clay’s coils, coloring slips etc. Also, this course intends to teach the principles of firing process and this includes kilns’ setting, firing behavior, variables of firing’s temperatures and physical changes within the firing process especially in biscuit firing stage etc.

 

Handicrafts: ARED3230
The course aims to acquire the student in a general way about cultures, and their impacts from various aspects on the art-crafts. Familiarity with the applications implemented in this field and the impact of craft skills on managing the economic system. The course focuses on providing the students with artistic skills through integrated practical applications on industrial assets, manual skills and decorative methods for some arts and crafts in the Sultanate in particular and the whole countries in general. The course seeks to reinforce the student’s knowledge about the stages of development of handicrafts and their current-status of progress in order to empower and benefit from them in the field of teaching handicraft artworks or preparing small or micro projects in the Sultanate. The most popular well known globally in the field of crafts are metalwork, woodworking, pottery, weaving and textile decoration ... etc.

 

Experimentation in Different Media: ARED3240
The aim of this course is to direct students towards empirical thought in arts. So they can benefit from the available materials in the environmental whether they are natural materials, or artificial ones, or any pre-made stuff depend on the empirical system. Thus, they study the different characteristics of these materials, and know-how to deal with them in order to produce artworks.

 

Contemporary techniques in Art: ARED3250
This course helps the student to get acquainted with the most important modern and contemporary techniques in the production of artistic works in all fields of plastic art, and to provide him with artistic and innovative skills in order to implement innovative artistic models, and the student can find innovative aesthetic solutions in his artistic works by employing modern technologies In his works.

 

Graphic Design (1): ARED3260
This course teaches the scientific foundations of graphic design through principles and theories of design. Graphic design is introduced here as a new stream of art education and an important component of visual language. Graphic design uses techniques to deliver a specific massage to a specific audience. The course also discusses the most important contemporary tools available to the artist and designer, such as advanced design software and devices related to the creative productive process, such as printers, tablets, scanners and electronic pens. The course teaches students how to utilize graphic design applications for educational purposes and how to find creative solutions for design problems.

 

Drawing (2): ARED4102
This course aims at develop the students' ability to observe and understand spatial relationships between things, whether natural or synthetic, and treating them with different drawing media, and providing students with the opportunity to exhibit their own styles in expressing themselves through drawing and construct a suitable amount of art concepts and ideas related to this field.

 

Graphic Design (2): ARED4110
This course is complementary to Graphic Design (1), but is more advanced. The course is different in terms of its content and the techniques used. It contains some advanced practical applications used in design and students will produce and design publications using specific applications. This course introduces the general theories and aims of graphic design, the application of techniques, and new devices that directly relate to graphic design. Examples of these devices are, digital cameras, and smart phones. This course teaches students how to produce an effective and attractive publication, and helps students to construct design campaigns and strategies for specific events or products. It also shows students how graphic design applications can be used for educational purposes, and how to find creative solutions for design problems.

 

Drawing (2): ARED4111
This course aims at develop the students' ability to observe and understand spatial relationships between things, whether natural or synthetic, and treating them with different drawing media, and providing students with the opportunity to exhibit their own styles in expressing themselves through drawing and construct a suitable amount of art concepts and ideas related to this field.

 

Design Applications: ARED4130
This course aims at providing various experiences to make designs according to constructional rules of decorative designs, dealing with the colors of spectrum through a lull understanding of their psychological and physical characteristics, means of employing them to assert the esthetics of the artwork, basic concepts and mono-dimensional artistic elements in building structural systems that achieve advanced and innovative designs, designs of decorative character employing expression values of light and movement, as well as systems to achieve multi-surface decorative paintings.

 

Advanced applications in fine art disciplines: ARED4260
The curriculum expose group of knowledge skills and advanced technology in different fields of art that posed by department, the aim is to develop the students creative capacities in the field of art that is intended to increase the dosage of training through a selection of free professional, and to implement an art project at the end of the semester reflects the benefit earned by the student in terms of techniques and knowledge associated with the movement of visual art on the international scene, and the latest scientific experience in this area.
