MA Program in Curriculum and Instruction:

This program aims to prepare highly qualified specialized national educational research leaders to serve Omani educational institutions of all types and levels. It also aims to keep abreast of the educational developments and changes and their global trends, and benefit from their scientific and practical applications in Omani curricula for the sake of continuously developing them and providing suggestions p and possible solutions to the problems that may arise. To achieve this, the program is based on preparing researchers specialized in the field of curriculum and instruction equipped with a number of important scientific skills, the most important of which are: theoretical foundations related to teaching and preparing teachers, scientific research competencies necessary to study and solve educational problems and curriculum planning competencies in terms of analysis, evaluation and development according to the latest global educational trends. This program is also concerned with enabling students to conduct specialized research studies in curricula, teaching methods, and teacher education. The department offers master's programs in curricula and teaching methods in six majors, namely: (Islamic education, Arabic, social studies, English, science, and mathematics). These programs are offered in two options: The Courses Only Track where the student has to study a set of courses between (30-36) credit hours and the Courses and Thesis Track where the student has to study a set of courses between (24-30) credit hours, in addition to a thesis whose weighing is (6) credit hours. The official period for obtaining a master's degree extends from one to three years, depending on the program and program type.

Contemporary Trends in Teacher Education: CUTM6103

The course aims to equip students with both theoretical and practical knowledge on various systems of teacher preparation and teacher professional development programs, especially in terms of both national and international models and the latest developments in the field. The course also covers the most important approaches in teacher preparation such as the competency-based approach, and the system-based approach. The course also includes practical activities and tasks where students analyze and evaluate teacher preparation programs in their area of specialization, in light of the philosophies of teaching, and standards of academic accreditation. Other tasks in the course include microteaching and field visits; diagnosis of professional needs; identifying channels of partnerships with stakeholders; identifying challenges and constraints and developing research partnerships between teacher preparation programs and the educational field. The course also addresses the role of teacher preparation programs in promoting positive attitudes towards the profession and strengthening teachers' values and positive dispositions as well as the role of the teacher as a guide who is capable of understanding learners' behavioral and developmental problems and how to deal with them.

 

Assessment in School Curriculum: CUTM6104

This course addresses the theoretical framework of educational assessment, the problems that the field faces and the latest developments in it . The course aims to equip the students with the necessary skills and comptencies to practice assessment in the teaching process in terms of: designing valid and reliable assessment tools that address cognitive, affective and psychomotor aspects of learning, applying these assessment tools on leaners and collecting assessment results, analysing assesment results, using technology in different aspects of the process, consulting the latest research and adopting the latest developments, and referring to both national and international standards on assessment and implementing them on the data analysis of students' assessment results such as those in TIMSS and PIRLS or national test results. The course also distinguishes between assessment as a main component in curriculum design and course evaluation as a process that aims to improve a course. The course will include practical exercises on curriculum assessment in light of national and international standards and demands.

Problems in Islamic Curriculum and Teaching Methods: CUTM6112

A study of various problems related to Islamic education, including: teacher training; school textbooks; skills of recitation and recital of the Holy Qur'an; choosing verses from the Holy Qur'an at the general education level; choosing sayings of the Prophet; teaching Islamic education; problems arising from the spread of certain negative ideas. Advanced Methods in Islamic Education: CUTM6113

An examination of the different modern approaches to teaching Islamic education: historical, informational, subjective, social and comprehensive. As well, modern teaching methods are studied: discovery methods, questionnaires, individualized instruction. Lerning cycle concept-mapping story, using computers in islamic education Finally, the course examines: teaching Islamic concepts and principles; the nature of values, tendencies and feelings, and their inter-relations; the role of the above in the Islamic education curriculum; methods of note-taking; linguistic interplay. Islamic Curriculum and Methods of Teaching in Schools: CUTM6115

thisadvanced course introduces to the students the curriculum of Islamic education in the three stages: elementary, preparatory and secondary. The four elements of the curriculum: aims, content, methods of teaching and methods of evaluation are carefully examined and avaluated. Teaching methods employed are: content analysis, dicussions and research papers about the nature of teaching islamic education at omani schools.

 

Research Project in Islamic Education Curriculum and Instruction: CUTM6116

The aim of the course is to provide the learner with the basic concepts associated with educational research, identifying its elements, steps, procedures and applications by addressing a specific field research problem in Islamic education curricula and methods of teaching and applying them, formulating questions and/or assumptions that define them, identifying their members or community and identifying them, collecting data through appropriate tools, monitoring and analysingresults according to appropriate statistical processes, and then interpreting them, and writing recommendations and suggestions. The learner displays his research and the results he reached for discussion by faculty members in the specialty.

 

Curriculum Theory & Design in Islamic Education: CUTM6117

This course aims to introduce students to the concept of theory, the concept of philosophy, the relationship between general philosophy and educational philosophy, the steps of constructing the theory of the curricula of education, the relationship of theory to the foundations of the curriculum, models of theories of the universal curriculum, It also acknowledges students with the comparison between the theories of the curriculum in light of its vision of the realities of divinity, the universe, humanities and life, and its relationship to Muslim education. Moreover the course introduces students to the concept of curriculum design, its elements, and steps and some models and applications. In addition the course also covers topics related to the concept of curriculum development its importance, the participants in the process of development, methods of development and its foundations and steps. And the theoretical aspects of the process of building, developing, organizing and evaluating the curriculum in the Sultanate.

 

Master's Thesis: CUTM7001

The course aims at preparing students in writing MA thesis in his/her specialty area in curriculum and instruction according to the academic regulations of postgraduate studies. The thesis should include all scientifically acceptable research elements such as the literature review, data collection and analysis, and drawing conclusions and recommendations. The student has to present the research proposal before the start of writing the thesis (seminar 1). Moreover, he/she has to present the findings in a departmental seminar (seminar 2). The student can register for the thesis after completing 12 credit hours of required courses.

Problem in Arabic Curriculum and Teaching Methods: CUTM6122

A study of various special problems in the field of teaching Arabic, including: teacherrelated problems; school textbooks; productive skills (speaking and ting); receptive skills (reading and listening); analysis of linguistic errors; difficulties in acquiring listening skills; difficulties in acquiring linguistic structures; diglossia and its effect on acquiring teaching skills.

 

Advanced Methods in Arabic Education: CUTM6123

Topics include: psychological theories relating to language development in individuals; relation between methods of teaching Arabic and the fields of psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics; modern trends and methods in teaching Arabic; use of the computer; affective aspect of language acquisition; incentives to learning language; relation between the method of learning and linguistic fluency; methods of note-taking and linguistic interplay. Arabic Curriculum and Methods of Teaching Schools: CUTM6125

This advanced course introduces to the students the curriculum of arabic in the threestages: elementary, preparatory and secondary. Aims, content, methods of teaching and methods of evaluation of the curriculum are carefully examined and evaluated . Several methods of teaching are employed, these include: these include: content analysis, discussions and research.

 

Research Project in Arabic Language Curriculum and Instruction: CUTM6126

This course aims to provide learners in the curricula and methods of teaching the Arabic language the basic concepts related to educational research, and identify its elements and steps; by addressing a specific field research problem in specialization and its application, and formulating questions and / or hypotheses that define it, while identifying its members or society and its sample, and collecting Data through appropriate tools, Perform data analysis, interpreting results, and writing recommendations and Suggestion. At the end of the application, the learners present to the faculty members in the specialization what they have come up for their discussion in it.

The course aims to enable the student in the Master of Arabic Curriculum and Teaching Methods program to build an in-depth knowledge of the theory of the curriculum, its relation to the educational theory, its critique, and identify the genesis of the syllabus, its main scholars and types. And develop its ability to draw the processes of the curriculum in terms of its concept, characteristics, procedures, and the conclusion of the most important challenges facing the curricula of the Arabic language, and how to deal with them.

This program is designed to provide students with adequate background knowledge in ELT curriculum design. It covers the different types of ELT curriculum such as structural curriculum, notional-functional curriculum, lexical curriculum, procedural curriculum and negotiated curriculum. The program is also concerned with the different theorotical underpinnings of each type. Strengths and limitations of each type will be discussed with particular emphasis on its applicability to the Omani context. Students will be required to analyze different curricular documents particularly Omani English Curricular documents.

This program is designed to provide students with adequate background knowledge in ELT curriculum design. This program is designed to provide students with current trends in foreign and second language teaching related to the whole issue of effective language teaching. More specifically, the following topic areas will be covered: Research-based indicators of effective foreign language teaching. The post-method phase. Task-based language learning. Reflective foreign language teaching. Classroom management Selecting and evaluating foreign language WWW materials.

 

English Education through English: CUTM6134

This course is intended to provide the students with adequate background knowledge in Applied Linguistics for language teaching. More specifically students should be exposed to readings in the functional analysis of language, particularly the speech act theory, discourse analysis, second language acquisition and foreign language learning and the whole area of learner autonomy and language learning strategies. They should also be exposed to a separate module on academic writing skills.

 

Research Project in English language Curriculum and Instruction: CUTM6135

The course aims to provide learners with the basic knowledge and skills of educational research, and to identify its elements and procedures, by addressing a specific research problem in English Language Curriculum and Instruction (ELT) and its applications. This includes: formulating viable research questions and/or hypothesis, defining and selecting sample population, collecting data by appropriate instruments and analyzing, and interpreting the findings as well as writing recommendations and suggestions. Upon the competition of the research project, the findings are presented and discussed at the ELT unit.

The course looks at curriculum theory and explores curriculum issues as they relate to globalization and IT revolution. The course also introduces innovative ways of developing ELT curriculum. Students are involved in class presentations, projects, field work, peer assessments, role playing and small group discussions.

Advanced Methods in Social Studies Education: CUTM6143

This advanced course concentrates on Teaching skills, especially those relevant to maps and globes, questioning skills, inductive skills, distinguishing between facts and opinions, problem solving skills, social participation skills, teaching values and attitudes, characteristics of the effective teacher, criticizing research studies in the field and writing research proposals. This course aims to introduce a key concepts, namely theory, philosophy and the relationship between general philosophy and educational philosophy. In addition, these concepts employed to understand the steps of building the specific theory of educational curriculum in terms of its influence on the foundations and components of the curriculum. The course aims to provide learners with the basic knowledge, skills and values related to the educational research in science education. This will be demonstrated by addressing a specific research problem in science education and its applications. This includes: formulating viable questions and / or hypotheses, identifying and selecting sample population, collecting data with appropriate tools, analyzing and interpreting the results, writing recommendations and suggestions. Art Curriculum Design and Development: CUTM6181

This course aims to equip the candidate with the basics design of art education curriculum and its developing methods, based on recent trends in curricula development and theories. This course targets in particular curriculum designers and developers, art educators, art teachers and supervisors. This course will focus on the art education reforming movements, theories and models of art curriculum, national standards and art curriculum and their relation to standards of art teacher preparation programs. It's also includes the UNESCO Roadmap on Arts Education, and Sustainable Development Goals in Art education as an approach to develop learning in schools. It will also deal with executive research as an approach to curriculum development in light of the contemporary theories of art education. In this course, candidate will practice curriculum design projects for art curriculums which reflecting the methods of integrating learning and education within one or more theory of art education curriculum theories.

 

Reading in Art and Art education: CUTM6182

This course aims to activate the candidate's role, enabling him to select and review the literature, the studies and the published scientific researches, in order to have an overview on the researches' topics, the issues and the research problems as well as the artistic and scientific concepts related to Art education curricula and its teaching methods. Thus, the candidate will acquire the skills of writing reports, scientific research or thesis and will know several global organizations working on education through art in the United King Dom, such as British National Association in Art and Design (National Society for Education in Art and Design, NSEAD), International Association for Education through Art- National Art Education Association (NAEA) in the USA, and other organizations concerning Art and Art Education. Candidate also will be introduced to the most important scientific refereed journals and magazines in the discipline of curricula and Art Education teaching methods such as Studies in Art Education, The Research of Visual Arts, Journal of Aesthetic Education, in the USA, the Journal of Art and Design Education belonging to the British Association of NSEAD, and other relevant scientific journals in Art Education at Australia and Canada such as Curriculum Studies and series of Educational Researches.

 

Methods of Teaching Art Education (advanced): CUTM6183

This course aims to provide practical and theoretical knowledge regarding modern art education strategies and teaching methods that associated with current issues. It includes many topics such as: Nature of teaching fine arts, educational lessons from arts, Projects-Based Art Education, Inquiring -Based Art Education, Imagination-Based Strategy, Problem Solving-Based Education, Meta-knowledge Strategy, Advanced organization and concept maps methods, Contract-Based education, constructive learning, Research-Based Education, Museum-Based Education, New Technology-Based Education strategy, E-Art Education, and Art Integration Strategy. This course also refers to some of current issues related to Art Education such as identity, democracy, peace and Arts Curriculum, Visual Culture and Art Education, Multiculturalism and Sustainable Development and their relation to Art Education at schools in the Sultanate of Oman.

 

Contemporary issues in Art and Art Education: CUTM6184

This course aims to present and discuss the major contemporary issues in curriculum and Art Education methods of teaching such as Multiculturalism, and how to integrate it into the Contemporary art curricula in Art Education, The issue of visual culture in the basic education school and its educational and artistic dimensions . It also covers the issue of contemporary art and Postmodernism Artists' Artwork and how to utilize them for developing and enhancing the content of Fine Arts curriculum, and how to integrate relevant disciplines into the curricula such as Art Criticism, Aesthetic, the History of Art and Art production . The course also refers to the globalization and Fine Arts curriculum with correlating them to other issues such as modernism and contemporary in Fine Arts , and how to use seize the introductions of Islamic Art in developing the curricula and the philosophy of art via Islamic and educational perspectives, and other problems and issues related to art education curriculum and current practices of contemporary art.

 

Assessment in Art Education: CUTM6185

This course aims to equip the student with the knowledge of Assessment philosophy and its facts in Art and Art Education, with aiming to understand the design methods of assessment and evaluation in the discipline. It includes the following topics: philosophy of assessment in Art and Art Education, the nature of Fine Arts discipline and its relation to the evaluation, history of evaluation in Art Education, theories of Aesthetic and evaluation (Simulation, expressionism, theory of form, instrumental theory, opened theory, institutional theory, theory of post-modernism), Standardized tests, alternative evaluation forms, comprehensive evaluation based on the art Portfolio and presenting (ARTS PROPEL) project which has been developed by Gardner in Harvard University, performance or practice evaluation, and disposition evaluation in Fine Arts, with reference to the evaluation fundamentals and principles within art exhibitions, Self Assessment , designing multi dimensional evaluation techniques and standards rubric for art disciplines as an approach for the Quality Assurance in teaching Art and Art production.

 

Supervision and Guidance in Art Education: CUTM6186

This course aims to equip the candidate with skills and competencies of supervision related to teaching Fine Arts in pre and post basic education schools in Sultanate of Oman, and to develop the teachers' performance through the follow-up sessions in the field and workshops that could be organized by an educational supervisor in Fine Arts. This course also refers to the standards of judging and evaluating the Art teacher performance and the Fine Arts education program level. It also deals with principles and plans of the international standards of art programs in schools and their required equipments. It also aims to recognize the concept of partnership in teacher preparation within school and in other educational institutions related to Fine Arts curriculum and methods of teaching such as museums, art galleries and exhibitions.

 

Inquiring - Based Art Education: CUTM6187

This course aims to provide the candidate with several opportunities to practice his/her thinking abilities in the area of teaching Art based on research approaches, experimentation and exploration of the best teaching practices in Art Education. This course will focus on teaching art by the survey-based, with concerning to it as a comprehensive approach to integrating learners effectively, brings the real world, encourages group work and takes into account different types of learning and complementation with the other curricula subjects. It will also focus on the practice of different art education theories and their issues. It also concerns on applying approach of learning by survey-based with aim of investigation, experiment and exploration the factors influencing effectively the process of Art learning.

 

Graduation project: CUTM6188

In this course, candidates will undertake a small project as a research study to complete the course requirements for the master degree in Curriculum and Instruction of Art Education. In the fourth semester in their study, candidates will carry on the research project under the supervision of the specialized professor. The idea of the project will be chosen during the end of first semesters and in the beginning of the second year the research topic should officially identified (third semester) to be completed and assessed not later than summer. The research project will be examined by the experts' committee from the Curriculum and Instruction department and accordingly, candidate will awarded final result: success, or failure at the end of the study.
