An overview on Educational Qualification Diploma Program (DP)

The Educational Qualification Diploma program at the College of Education, Sultan Qaboos University, was launched in the academic year 2015/2016. This initiative was developed in response to the educational trends in the Sultanate of Oman, aiming to meet the community's demand for qualified teaching professionals across various educational levels. The program is designed to equip educators with essential teaching skills and professional competencies, enhancing their capacity to engage in ongoing professional development in alignment with the latest advancements in their respective academic fields. Comprising 34 credit hours, the program is divided into 10 courses and is delivered over two semesters (18 credit hours in Semester 1 and 16 credit hours in Semester 2). The College of Education has crafted the curriculum to integrate theoretical components that encompass relevant knowledge, theories, and principles, alongside practical elements that emphasize their application within the educational context.

CUTM5305: Teaching Methods in Islamic Education
This course introduces the nature and characteristics of Islamic education, emphasizing the qualities, competencies, and roles essential for an Islamic education teacher. It covers the skills involved in planning Islamic education lessons across various levels and models, along with general teaching methods and their specific applications within the field of Islamic education. These methods include discussion and dialogue, the standard method, the inductive method, and contemporary approaches such as cooperative learning, problem solving, and self-directed learning. Additionally, the course explores the integration of modern technologies in teaching Islamic education, the strategy of asking questions, and the skill of reasoning with Qur'anic verses and noble hadiths. It also outlines effective methods and procedures for teaching different branches of Islamic education, including the Holy Qur'an, noble hadith, Islamic creed, jurisprudence, and the biography of the Prophet. Lastly, the course will address the standards necessary for preparing an Islamic education teacher.

 

CUTM5304: Teaching Methods in Arabic Language
This course is designed to equip candidates with a comprehensive set of knowledge, skills, and values essential for teaching Arabic in both basic and post-basic education. Participants will be introduced to contemporary methods, techniques, and strategies for enhancing various Arabic language skills, including listening, reading, speaking, writing, spelling, calligraphy, grammar, morphology, literary analysis, rhetoric, criticism, and prosody. Additionally, the course will address lesson planning, implementation, and evaluation skills, while also fostering students' creative and critical thinking abilities and enhancing their enthusiasm for teaching Arabic in general education. Furthermore, the course will explore the standards for preparing effective Arabic language teachers.

 

CUTM5309: Teaching Methods in English Language
This course is designed to enhance the pedagogical knowledge and skills of student teachers. It introduces various methods, approaches, and techniques in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), with an emphasis on the four skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening, along with grammar and vocabulary. The course also addresses curricular, institutional, and student-related issues, linking scholarly concepts to the local context. Additionally, it focuses on essential skills such as lesson planning, assessment, and classroom management. Students will explore traditional approaches to English Language Teaching (ELT) as well as Communicative Language Teaching and Task-Based Learning and Teaching. The course includes three weeks of hands-on experience in local schools, which will prepare students for their roles as English teachers.

 

CUTM5306: Teaching Methods in Science
This course is designed to equip candidates with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential for effective planning and instruction in science education. It prepares them to apply these principles effectively, allowing for the integration of diverse teaching methods and classroom activities that align with their students' cognitive processes. Additionally, the course emphasizes addressing students' alternative conceptions and fostering creative thinking in various educational contexts. Candidates will gain an understanding of the nature of science, training in various scientific processes, and instruction in several contemporary teaching methods. Furthermore, the course aims to develop candidates' ability to create safe learning environments for science education and to assess student learning outcomes effectively. Finally, it will explore the standards for preparing qualified science teachers.

 

CUTM5307: Teaching Methods in Math
This course equips participants with essential skills in lesson planning and the creation of effective mathematics learning environments rooted in constructivist theories and multiple intelligences. Additionally, it addresses technology skills related to graphing calculators in algebra education and interactive mathematics software. The course will also introduce strategies for teaching mathematical concepts, align with the NCTM standards for mathematics education, and explore methods for assessing these concepts. Practical applications of mathematics teaching skills will be a central focus, along with discussions on the standards for preparing mathematics teachers.

 

CUTM5311: Teaching Methods in Art Education
This course is designed to equip students with essential knowledge of art education teaching methods and techniques within public schools. It will cover the fundamental concepts of teaching, including its principles and components, while emphasizing the philosophy of art education and its significance in society. The focus will be on developing students' competencies in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of art education instruction. Additionally, the course aims to provide both theoretical foundations and practical experience in various art education teaching methods and approaches. It will explore a range of teaching methods, from discussion-based to problem-solving techniques. In terms of teaching approaches, the course will examine multicultural methods, knowledge integration, and the structured nature of art education, as well as the roles of art exhibitions, museums, and art portfolios in the educational process.

 

CUTM5312: Teaching Methods in Social Studies
This course is designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge, skills, and values essential for teaching social studies in basic education. It introduces students to the fundamental nature and characteristics of social studies, as well as the qualities, competencies, and roles required of a social studies teacher. Additionally, the course examines the social studies curriculum in basic education within the Sultanate of Oman and develops lesson planning skills applicable at various levels and models. The curriculum also explores general teaching methods and their application in social studies, including discussion and dialogue, storytelling, problem-solving, brainstorming, concept mapping, the standard method, the inductive method, active learning, and the integration of e-learning. Practical training in teaching methods is provided through a microteaching lab, allowing students to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Moreover, this course aims to enhance students' research skills, foster creative and critical thinking, and boost their motivation to teach social studies across different educational levels.

 

CUTM5313: Teaching Methods Music Skills
This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and teaching methods essential for delivering music education in alignment with contemporary pedagogical trends. It explores the qualities and competencies required of a music teacher in today’s context, introduces relevant educational theories related to music education, and provides training in modern teaching methodologies. Students will learn effective lesson planning, gain insights into classroom management, including the factors that contribute to success as well as common challenges—and become acquainted with typical pitfalls in teaching music. Additionally, the course presents cognitive and skills-based assessment methods applicable to music education, instructs on the selection and organization of educational activities, and offers training in microteaching, allowing students to practice teaching music education to their peers. Students are expected to plan music education lessons, evaluate their classmates' teaching, and provide feedback on the various teaching methods previously explained. They are also expected to demonstrate critical thinking skills during microteaching sessions.

 

CUTM5321: Educational Curriculum in Islamic Education
The course is designed to enhance the candidate's understanding of the meanings and implications of the curriculum, emphasizing its intellectual, cognitive, psychological, and social foundations, while also highlighting its Islamic identity. It aims to familiarize the candidate with the essential components and elements of the curriculum—such as objectives, content, methods and activities, and assessment—and the interrelationships among these components. Additionally, the course seeks to equip the candidate with knowledge of curriculum designs and structures, both in theory and practice, and to introduce principles of curriculum evaluation and development. Practical applications of curriculum elements within the Sultanate of Oman will be included, along with solutions to some of its challenges. Finally, the course will involve hands-on training through field experiences in schools.

 

CUTM5322: Educational Curriculum in Arabic Language
This course is designed to define the nature and functions of the Arabic language while introducing students to both traditional and modern concepts of the school curriculum. It will also cover the processes involved in the print and electronic Arabic language curricula, including their design, implementation, evaluation, and development. Participants will gain an understanding of the concepts, steps, content, activities, and components of the Arabic language curriculum, along with the criteria for their selection and the principles of organization. Additionally, the course will focus on curriculum evaluation, particularly for those commonly employed in schools within the Sultanate of Oman and other countries, while addressing the general challenges associated with teaching Arabic. Furthermore, it emphasizes training learners in the skills of curriculum design and analysis.

 

CUTM5323: Educational Curriculum in English Language
This course serves as an introduction to curriculum design, examining the key principles and challenges associated with the development of educational curricula in general, and language curricula specifically. It addresses various stages of the process, including the formulation of goals and objectives, the specification of content, and methods of evaluation. Students are encouraged to critically analyze the English Language Teaching (ELT) curriculum within Omani public-school education. Through a range of tasks and activities, participants will deepen their understanding of the complexities involved in curriculum development.

 

CUTM5324: Educational Curriculum in Science
This course is designed to acquaint students with the concept of the educational curriculum, along with its related terms and concepts. It will differentiate between traditional and modern educational curricula and foster a comprehensive understanding of the intellectual, cognitive, psychological, and social foundations of curriculum development. Additionally, the course will emphasize the unique characteristics of science curricula in line with global trends and explore their alignment with Islamic principles. Students will be introduced to the various components and elements of the science curriculum, including objectives, content, methods and activities, and assessment, as well as the interrelationships among these components. The course will facilitate a thorough understanding of curriculum design and organization from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Furthermore, it will cover the evaluation and development of the science curriculum, incorporating practical applications of methodological designs for curriculum elements in science textbooks. Discussions on relevant issues, topics, and recent developments anticipated to be included in the curriculum will also take place, along with training in content analysis procedures for the science curriculum based on specific criteria, culminating in practical applications of these methodologies.

 

CUTM5325: Educational Curriculum in Mathematics
This course explores the social, psychological, cognitive, and philosophical foundations essential for developing a mathematics curriculum. It also delves into various components of the curriculum, including objectives, content, teaching methods, and assessment strategies in the field of mathematics. Additionally, the course provides candidates with the NCTM standards for school mathematics and offers analytical insights into the mathematics curriculum in Oman. It further defines the concept of teaching, discusses various instructional approaches, and covers instructional management, all with practical applications specific to the mathematics curriculum in pre-university education.

 

CUTM5326: Educational Curriculum in Art Education
This course is designed to introduce the concept of curriculum in general, with a particular focus on art education, including its history, foundations, and processes. It aims to familiarize students with various models of art teaching curricula, their development, and the different stages and periods of art education. The objective is to deepen the understanding of the foundational aspects of constructing art education curricula and their components. Additionally, the course offers a comprehensive overview of curriculum organization, along with specific examples related to art curriculum. It also explores the role of art curricula in fostering creative thinking and provides insights into the analysis and development of curricula.

 

CUTM5327: Educational Curriculum in Social Studies
The course is designed to enhance the student’s understanding of the meanings and implications of the curriculum and its foundational elements—intellectual, cognitive, psychological, and social. Students will learn to identify the various components of the social studies curriculum, including objectives, content, methods, activities, and evaluation, as well as the interconnections among these elements. Additionally, the course aims to familiarize students with both the theoretical and practical aspects of curriculum design and organization. It will also introduce the processes of curriculum evaluation and development. Through practical applications of curriculum elements, the course will offer solutions to some of the challenges faced in this field.

 

CUTM5328: Educational Curriculum in Music Skills
The course aims to introduce students engaged in musical skills training to the school curriculum by exploring both the linguistic and technical aspects of the concept. It will examine the evolution of the curriculum from past to present, highlighting the implications for teachers, students, and the content of study. The course will also analyze and present the modern components and elements of the curriculum in a comprehensive and detailed manner, covering its foundational premises, philosophy, objectives, content, teaching aims, educational activities, assessment, and feedback. It will begin with an exploration of study content and its organization, followed by the mechanisms for formulating educational objectives, selecting teaching methods, choosing educational tools, and designing suitable student activities, concluding with assessment methods. The course further aims to identify the fundamental principles for constructing music education curricula, as well as the processes and standards employed in their design and implementation across various educational frameworks. Emphasis will be placed on what is most effective for teaching music education, alongside strategies for evaluating and enhancing the curriculum in this field.
EDUC5113: Introduction to Education
This course explores fundamental concepts in education, highlighting the intellectual, cultural, social, political, historical, professional, and technological foundations of the field. It emphasizes the key elements and objectives of the educational process through the lens of various educational philosophies, including an Islamic perspective. The course also investigates the intellectual foundations of alternative education models, advocating for equal educational opportunities and access for all societal segments, including individuals with special needs. Additionally, it considers the impact of education on cultural and social dimensions within society, promoting respect for diversity among learners. The course addresses important professional and legal aspects of the teaching role, the educator's standing in society, and the ethics governing the teaching profession. EDUC5114/5116: The Education System and its Management in Oman
The course explores the concept of educational systems and their interactions with various social systems, along with an in-depth examination of educational administration, including its subsystems, theories, and fundamental processes. It emphasizes the application of effective classroom management skills and highlights the teacher's role as an educational leader. Additionally, the course aims to identify the most significant forces and factors influencing the educational system and its management in the Sultanate of Oman, while also analyzing the development and philosophy of education in the region. The current state of educational organization and management in Oman is reviewed, along with the prominent challenges and issues it faces. Furthermore, the course compares the Omani education system with leading regional and international educational frameworks. Lastly, it introduces students to key contemporary issues and innovative educational and administrative practices within the Omani education system.
TECH5001: Educational Technology and Information
This course explores the concept of educational technology and media, emphasizing their crucial roles in the teaching and learning processes. It covers the classification of educational media, including approaches to their selection and design, as well as strategies for integrating technology across various disciplines. The course examines the design of online learning, focusing on digital learning resources and the effects of 2G internet services on education. Additionally, it highlights the significance of emerging educational technologies, assistive technologies, and virtual reality. A discussion on educational web portals is also included. The practical component is designed to cultivate essential skills such as creating presentations, designing concept maps, producing educational videos, conducting information searches using search engines, preparing portfolios, and developing learning management systems.

The course is designed to provide an introduction to the practical aspects of modern and contemporary theories, issues, and research in learning. It will emphasize educational applications in the learning process, covering topics such as motivation, individual differences among learners, learning theories, higher-order cognition, information processing, creative thinking, problem solving, and the transfer of learning.

PSYC5420/5421: Classroom Measurement and Assessment
This course is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of measurement concepts, emphasizing key ideas such as measurement, standard, level, and criterion. It also clarifies essential assessment concepts including evaluation, assessment, test, exam, portfolio, and alternative assessment methods utilized in the classroom. The course underscores the construction of achievement tests, outlining the necessary steps for preparing a table of specifications, writing effective test items, ensuring their psychometric properties, and processing various test items through scoring and result analysis. Ultimately, the course equips students with the skills to administer achievement tests and interpret their results effectively.

PSYC5430/5431: School Guidance and its Applications
This course is designed to equip students with the essential skills needed for the early detection of challenges faced by school students. It explores various types and mechanisms for referring individuals to specialists in psychological counseling or special education, including techniques such as observation, initial interviews, and the examination of student records. Additionally, the course emphasizes training in behavior management and modification skills, promoting the holistic development of positive academic and behavioral skills for all learners.
