The Department of Curriculum and Instruction was established as a unit within the Department of Education and Psychology in 1986 and became an independent academic department at the beginning of the academic year 1991/1992. The Department aims to prepare teachers, educational supervisors and specialists to meet the needs of the educational sector in the Sultanate of Oman; it also aims to develop the professional skills of workers in the field of education.7

The Department aspires to be an academic center of excellence in curriculum, teaching, research and community service.


Mission:

The Department strives to contribute to the preparation of skilled cadres who are capable of improving teaching and educational research and developing curricula in educational institutions to enhance the community’s sustainable development.


Department Objectives:

  • To prepare qualified educational professionals in the fields of curriculum and instruction at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
  • To develop instruction, training, and educational services on a scientific basis, through cooperation with concerned local, regional and international institutions.
  • To conduct mainstream research and its diverse applications to solve problems related to the curriculum and methods of instruction.
  • To contribute to building a knowledge based society and employing technology in curriculum development and instruction.
  • To strengthen the role of the curriculum in fostering spiritual and moral values, identity, and a sense of belonging and loyalty to the community and to the country at large.

The department offers a range of English courses. Below is a description of each course:

 

CUTM 1001 2cr. Science & Teaching Practice   (2hrs. Lectures)

The course aims to develop the student’s ability to recognize the intended science and the nature of science and its ethics and science processes. It also aims to introduce students to scientific literacy and its elements and determine the relationship between science, technology, society and the environment. The course also aims to introduce students to some controversial scientific issues of the day. In addition the course touches some moral and health societal phenomena and the role of education in the exposure and limit the spread. Moreover the course shows a simplified overview of some of the theories associated with the teaching of science.


CUTM 1002 2cr. Environmental Education.   (2hrs. Lectures)

The course aims to develop the student’s ability to recognize the intended environment, principles, foundations, components and related concepts, also and to identify the  environmental equilibrium factors causing it. And define the role of the human in the preservation and the implications of that. Also aims to identify some learning strategies of environmental education and approaches included in the school curricula, and reference to the role of the family and community institutions in spreading environmental awareness. The course also aims to introduce student with environmental legislations, and discuss some of the environmental issues and problems affecting the environment around him.


CUTM 1003 3cr. Teaching Basics.  (3hrs. Lectures)

Students are expected, by the end of the course, to be able to identify the concept of teaching, and its importance in the educational process. They are also expected to differentiate between the different levels of planning and apply standards of selecting appropriate teaching method to certain topics. Another important objective of the course is to realize the importance of educational multimedia in teaching situations. Creating a number of class questions addressed according to effective teaching standards and identifying the importance of motivation in teaching constitute another focus of the course. Students in the course are also expected to determine types of verbal interaction in teaching and deduce the concept of classroom management and its skills, strategies. Finally the course helps students to capture the concept of assessment and its different tools as well as to experience using critical thinking in teaching situations.


CUTM 3400  3cr. School Curriculum.  (3hrs. Lectures)

The course aims to develop students’ abilities in understanding the concept of curriculum, its types, bases, its Islamic identity, and the relationship between its components (i.e. objectives, content, techniques, activities, and evaluation). It also aims to help students to capture the different designs and organizations of curriculum theoretically and practically. It also focuses on core and integrated curriculum as well as the different processes of developing and evaluating curriculum in its different stages and identifying the roles of people involved in these stages. Finally the course presents practical applications for the different components of curriculum.


CUTM 3007  3cr. School Curriculum.  (3hrs.Lecture)

This introductory course in curriculum aims at providing students the basis of ELT curriculum design and development. It covers the different stages of the process, such as formulation of aims and objectives, specification of content (i.e., syllabus types: structural, lexical, notional, situational, task-based and process syllabus), and methods of evaluation. The course will require students to look critically at the local ELT curriculum guides and textbooks in both Basic and Secondary Education.


CUTM 3010 3cr. Method of tech Islamic Education (1).  (4hrs.Lecture)

This course introduces students to the nature of Islamic education and their characteristics, qualities teacher of Islamic education and competencies and roles, and the Platform for Islamic education in basic education in the Sultanate of Oman, and planning skills Islamic education lessons levels and models, and some teaching methods public and its applications in the field of Islamic education such as: discussion and dialogue, story, deductive and the inductive method. The course includes practicing teaching methods and skills in the micro-teaching.


CUTM 3011 3cr. Method of tech Arabic Language (1 ) (4hrs.Lecture)

This course aims to give the student a set of knowledge, skills and values for practicing modern teaching methods in Arabic education. It enables future Arabic teacher to understand the characteristics of the Arabic language, and the difficulties of teaching it to the school students. Additionally, this course emphasizes the importance of linking teaching practice to major learning theories in Arabic education such as language Acquisition theory, Self-regulated learning theory, Constructivist learning theory. In addition, this course aims to help the prospective teachers to develop learning skills and learning strategies that would help them to become independent and more self-directed learners. Finally, this course also aims to raise the prospective teachers’ motivation to teach Arabic language.


CUTM3012 3cr. Methods of Teaching English I.  (4hrs Lectures)

This course aims to develop student teachers’ pedagogical knowledge and skills. It introduces methods, approaches and techniques of TEFL with a focus on teaching the receptive skills (reading and listening) as well as vocabulary. Curricular, institutional and student related issues are addressed, associating scholarly matters to the local context. It also targets skills of planning and classroom management. It acquaints students with some traditional approaches to ELT Grammar Translation Method , the Direct Methods and the Audio-lingual Method), Communicative Language teaching. Application of the theoretical knowledge is facilitated in laboratory-based practice (microteaching).


CUTM 3014 3cr. Teaching Methods for Social Sciences I. (4hrs. Lectures)

The courses aimed at developing students' knowledge of social studies concepts and its historical development, relation with other knowledge fields. Develop students' knowledge of social studies aims and its resources, methods of formulation, traditional teaching methods and their effective way to apply them. Develop students skills of using teaching methods, content analysis, using multimedia, evaluation instruments, lesson plan, formulating classroom  questions, classroom management, and practicing of these skills in microteaching. 


CUTM 3016 3cr. Method of tech Science (1).  (4hrs.Lecture)

The course aims to provide  student teacher with science knowledge, skills and attitudes that help in teaching science and trained to be applied so as to be able to connect teaching methods and  class activities with various mental operations among students, and enjoy thinking creatively in teaching situations and the ability to generate various teaching ideas. The course also aims to develop aspects of motivation among the student teachers regarding science teaching. The teaching methods that the course focuses on are: practical demonstrations, discussions, formulate and ask questions, cooperative learning strategies, an introduction to inquiry learning and problem solving skills.  Moreover, the course focuses on the objectives of teaching science in the twenty first century, and general skills in teaching, and analysis of scientific content and scientific knowledge in its different levels.  In addition, the course provides student teachers with the nature of science, attitudes towards science and science teaching.


CUTM 3017 3cr. Method of tech Mathematics  (1).  (4hrs.Lecture)

The course aims to provide students with knowledge, skills and attitudes that help in the teaching of mathematics, and to train students on how to use such knowledge so that they become able to link the teaching methods of different classroom activities to pupils’ mental processes, and use creative thinking in various teaching situations and become able to generate a variety of teaching ideas. The course also aims to provide student with teaching strategies that are linked to the teaching and learning of mathematics, such as cooperative learning, discovery, and problem solving, as well as the recent innovations in curriculum and methods of teaching mathematics, as well as new evaluation methods in mathematics education.


CUTM 3018 3cr. Method of tech Physical Education (2).  (4hrs.Lecture)

The aim of this course is to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge of teaching processes in the field of physical education. It  and provide students with the roles and duties of the physical education teacher during the implementation of curriculum physical education inside and outside the school, and also includes clarification of theoretical knowledge and practical basic ways and methods of teaching physical education and how to employ them in line with curriculum content in various grades, also includes theoretical and practical knowledge for planning lessons and evaluating the educational process in the field of school sports. 


CUTM 3027 3cr. Method of tech Art Education (1).  (4hrs. Lecture)

The course aims to master the skills and learning tasks in the areas of planning, implementations, and evaluation of teaching in the various disciplines of art education, as well as acquiring a special knowledge in teaching art education methods for the second episode of primary education in the Sultanate of Oman. This course also focuses on the analysis of art education textbooks for the same episode and the development of skills in order to master the learning tasks. Also, to practice different art education teaching subjects in the micro- teaching lab, and training to design advanced educational and conceptual frameworks maps. This course will cover; lectures, discussions, cooperative learning, educational workshops, hands-on training, fields works, and individual projects.


CUTM 3029 2cr. Method of tech Information Technology (1).  (4hrs.Lecture)

This course aims to achieved the course’s objectives of  Methods of teaching IT through providing students with requested  knowledge and skills for teaching IT based on modern trends in teaching and learning this includes: IT teacher’s competencies, planning a good teaching,   training and implementing new teaching methods and approaches based on learning types and lesson content. In addition , it introduces same learning theories in relation to teach IT and analysis IT syllabuses with aims to acquiring knowledge and skills included in these syllabuses. Final,  training students how to use E-learning environments such as use a Moodle in teaching IT.


CUTM 3401 3cr. Education Curriculum for Islamic Education. (3hrs.Lecture) 

The course aims to develop the student's ability to understand the meaning and implications of the curriculum, and founded (intellectual, cognitive, psychological, and social). Highlighting Islamic identity, known components approach and its components (objectives, content, and methods and activities, and Calendar) and correlation between its components, also aims to help students become familiar designs curriculum and its systems theory and practice, and also aims to introduce the assessment methodology, and scalability. It includes scheduled practical applications on the elements of the curriculum, and to provide practical solutions to some problems.


CUTM 3402 3cr. Education Curriculum for Arabic Language. (3hrs.Lecture)

This course deals with the concept of curriculum past and present. It covers the definitions and procedures followed in designing, implementing, evaluating and developing Arabic curriculum. The course also covers criteria of selecting and sequencing areas of content and task types of Arabic curriculum.


CUTM 3403 3cr. Educational Curriculum for Social Sciences.  (3hrs. Lectures)

This course aims to introduce concept of traditional Curriculum and Modern Curriculum,  curriculum components, principles and criteria of  choosing, organizing and analyzing curriculum. This course also covers process of social studies curriculum such as instructing, designing, implementing,  evaluating and developing which includes its concepts, rationale and steps and procedures..  


CUTM 3404 3cr. Education Curriculum for Science.   (3hrs.Lecture)

The course aims to develop the student’s abilities to understand meanings and implications of the science curriculum, and its principles   (intellectual, cognitive, psychological, and social). Highlighting Islamic identity, and knowing curriculum components and its elements (objectives, content, methods and activities, and evaluation) and correlative relationship between its components, also aims to help students become familiar with the curriculum designs and its organizations theoretically and practically. Moreover, the course provides student teachers with the curriculum evaluation and development. It includes practical applications on the elements of the curriculum, and to provide practical solutions to some problems.


CUTM 3405 3cr. Education Curriculum for Mathematic. (3hrs.Lecture)

The course introduces the students to the major aspects of Mathematics curriculum and its components (Objectives, Content, Methods, and Evaluation). It provide the international standards of mathematics curricula . In addition, it help student in training to prepare instructional units based on school mathematics of basic education.


CUTM 3406 3 cr. Education Curriculum for Physical Education. (3hrs.Lecture)

This course aims to develop students’ knowledge about meanings of curriculum definitions and compare between them in the field of physical education. Also, it offers knowledge about the basis of curriculum (intellectual, cognitive, psychological and social. It also aims to provide students’ knowledge about various curriculum elements (objectives, content, methods and activities, and evaluation) and know the relationship between these components. It also aims to develop students’ knowledge about various curriculum designing approaches and their applications in the field of physical education, and curriculum models of physical education, and to identify the major processes of curriculum (design, development, evaluation) and includes practical applications on the elements of the curriculum, and provide practical solutions to some contemporary issues about the curriculum.


CUTM 3407 3cr. Education Curriculum for Arts Education. (3hrs.Lecture)

This course aims to introduce the concept of curriculum in generally and in art education in particularly and its history, establishment, basics and processes. It’s also aims to introduce the student to curriculum models in teaching art and its development and stages of teaching art curriculum in order to understand the basics of art education curriculum design and its components. It’s also aims to introduce the curriculum organizing in generally and in art curriculum in specifically. This course also includes the role of art curriculum in developing creative thinking and the way of analyzing and developing art curriculum.


CUTM 3408 3cr.  Education Curriculum for IT.  (3hrs.Lecture)

This course aims to introduce concept of IT Curriculum in the past and the present  as well as curriculum process of IT such as designing, implementing, evaluating and developing including its concept, stapes and contents of  IT curriculum and its activities, components, and criteria of choosing and organizing.


CUTM 4010 3cr. Method of tech Islamic Education (2).  (4hrs.lecture)

This course introduces students to ways of teaching the following: cooperative learning, problem solving, and inquiry, and self-learning and its applications in the field of teaching Islamic education, and the use of modern technologies in teaching Islamic education, and strategic questions in Islamic education, and skill inferred Qur'anic verses and Hadiths (the Prophet Sayings), and teaching Islamic education concepts, and teaching methods and procedures the following branches of Islamic education: the  Qur'an , and the Hadith, and the Islamic faith, and doctrine, and Biography of the Prophet, ethics and discipline, and Islamic systems. The course includes practicing teaching methods and skills in the micro-teaching.


CUTM 4011 3cr. Method of tech Arabic Language (2).  (4hrs.Lecture)

This course aims to give the student a set of knowledge, skills and values for practicing modern teaching methods in Arabic education.. In addition, this course aims to help the prospective teachers to develop learning skills and learning strategies that would help them to become independent and more self-directed learners. It covers the following topics: teaching practicum; characteristics and competencies of  efficient Arabic language teacher; definition, goals, skills, teaching methods and difficulties of teaching Arabic literature including literary texts analysis and appreciation, rhetoric, criticism, and prosody. In addition, the course deals with extracurricular activities and their role in enhancing Arabic language teaching.


CUTM4012 3cr. Methods of Teaching English II.   (4hrs. Lectures)

This course is a continuation of the previous prerequisite CUTM 3012. It provides the students with a critical analysis of the remaining major trends and methods in TEFL. It familiarizes the students with the strategies and models for teaching productive skills (i.e. speaking and writing) as well as grammar. The students are to be familiarized with the major techniques for integrative teaching of English language. It provides students with practical training in teaching the above-mentioned content through microteaching.


 CUTM 4014 3cr. Teaching Methods for Social Sciences I I. (4hrs. Lectures)

It aims at developing students knowledge and skills about concepts and issues in teaching social studies. Developing their knowledge and skills about new teaching methods, inquiry, problems solving, thinking skills, cooperative learning, brainstorming, Cort program etc. it also develop their skills about globs, software programs, classroom activities, and  current events.


CUTM 4016 3cr.  Method of tech Science (2).  (4hrs.Lecture)

The course aims to train student teacher on modern methods in science education, and to provide basic knowledge and skills necessary to teach science to suit the modern and international trends in teaching, and improves the skills needed to evaluate the learning outcomes and detect misconceptions with his students and the ability to correct these misconceptions. The course also helps student teachers to link between science teaching and concept formation among their students in light of the constructivist theory and the theory of information processing As well as the course aims to train student teachers to acquire science processes and develop thinking abilities such as critical thinking and creative thinking. Moreover, the course provides them with the skills necessary to become independent learners, and raises motivation of the student teacher to teach science.


CUTM 4017 3cr. Method of tech Mathematics (2).  (4hrs.Lecture)

The course aims at training students in modern methods in the teaching of mathematics, and to help them acquire basic knowledge and expertise needed to teach in accordance with modern global trends, and gain necessary to evaluate the learned and the disclosure of conceptual errors among students and have the ability to deal with them skills. The decision also aims to develop the student's knowledge of teaching mathematics standards, particularly those related to NCTM and how to employ them in classroom situations. In addition, it aims to link the different teaching methods and classroom activities to pupils’ mental processes, and employ creative thinking in various teaching situations. Finally, it helps generate a variety of teaching ideas, and use of mathematical skills.


CUTM 4018 3cr. Method of tech Physical Education (2).  (4hrs. Lecture)

The course aims to help students understand the relationship network linking teaching methods, styles and strategies, and its role in the implementation of physical education curriculum, and contains patterns of modern teaching for different subject materials in line with the technology available in schools. Also emphasizes the teaching skills necessary for physical education teacher, and methods employed in practical life, taking into account the surrounding evaluation methods, forms and tools used in teaching.


CUTM 4027 3cr. Method of tech Art Education (2).  (4hrs.Lecture)

This course covers the knowledge of different classifications of teaching units in the field of art education, and the skills of matrices planning term, and the sequencing of teaching units in the areas of art education and its implementations in the micro teaching labs. The course also will focuses on the analysis of art education textbooks for the same episode and the development of skills to master the learning tasks, and the familiarity with some types of thoughts and theories in art education fields and activated during the micro-teaching training. In addition, studying the necessary and appropriate strategies for the art education training and the use of computers in teaching art education, as well as identify the universal contemporary planning to be used in the teaching art education methods. This course will cover; lectures, discussions, cooperative learning, educational workshops, hands-on training, fields works, and individual projects.


CUTM 4029 3cr. Method of tech Information Technology (2).  (4hrs. Lectures)

This course aims to achieved the course’s objectives of  Methods of teaching IT through providing students with requested  knowledge and skills for teaching IT based on modern trends in teaching and learning this includes: training students to use some teaching methods of IT and introducing them to classroom management and its difficulties, factors that contribute to success in the classroom management, and introduce them to common mistakes in teaching IT. In addition, it presents evaluation styles for knowledge and skills which might used in teaching IT. Final, it aims to introduce students to some IT implementations such as virtual classrooms and how to use them in the teaching Information Technology.


CUTM 4500  9cr. Teaching Practice.  (18hrs.Field)

This course aims to acquaint the student competencies of planning, implementation, and evaluation teaching lessons; and enabling him/her to apply what he/she taught theories and principles related to process of teaching and learning. This includes: training student to do some professional activities inside the school, and developing  skills associated with the exercise of other activities and introducing the education system and schools environments. It aims to give student  opportunities to practice teaching ethics and learn self-confident  and knowing students’ needs and identifying some problems and their solutions.  The teaching practice implemented in schools during three days, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, each week.


CUTM3007 Educational curriculum

This is an introductory course in ELT curriculum design. The course covers the basic theories, principles, and approaches in this discipline. It also covers the different states of the process of curriculum design, such as formulation of goals and objectives, specification and sequencing of content, and methods of evaluation. Furthermore, the course helps the students to develop the professional skills required for designing, developing, evaluating, and innovating language curriculum. It also provides them with a variety of practical techniques for analyzing and evaluating the English text books used in the Omani schools in order to see how far the covered theoretical framework achieves the general and national purposes of teaching the language. The students are involved in various tasks and activities that deepen their understanding of the issues related to curriculum development in the Omani educational context.


CUTM3012 Teaching  Methods 1 for English

This course aims to develop student teachers’ pedagogical knowledge and skills. It introduces methods, approaches and techniques of TEFL with a focus on teaching the receptive skills (reading and listening) as well as vocabulary. Curricular, institutional and student related issues are addressed, associating scholarly matters to the local context. It also targets skills of planning and classroom management. It acquaints students with some traditional approaches to ELT (GMT, the Direct Methods and the Audio-lingual Method) as well as Communicative Language teaching. Application of the theoretical knowledge is facilitated in laboratory-based practice (microteaching).


CUTM4012 Teaching  Methods 2 for English

This course is a continuation of the previous prerequisite CUTM 3012. It provides the students with a critical analysis of the remaining major trends and methods in TEFL. It familiarizes the students with the strategies and models for teaching speaking, writing and grammar independently as well as all language skills integratively. It also acknowledges students with language testing component. Moreover,  it provides students with practical Field experience involving the design of  a Unit Plan for teaching .


CUTM4500 Teaching Practicum

The course aims at enabling the candidate to apply and show his/her content knowledge to support  his professional practices and instructional competencies. The candidate is a resident teacher at partners' schools that s/he visits daily during the semester. The course provides the candidate with opportunities of practical applications of the college's conceptual framework. the design, implementation, and evaluation of field experiences is handled according to the partnership principle in supervision between the college and the schools.
