Physical Education Department (PHED) at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) is the only educational institution in Oman that is qualifying physical education teachers and other sport related careers. Since its initiation in 1990 more than 17 cohorts have been graduate working as PE teachers, supervisors, sport managers and sport trainers in various organizations.

The degree plan consist theoretical content of sport physiology, kinesiology, psychology, sport administration, teaching methods and principal of coaching. It also includes skill and motor development of various individual and team sports as well as health fitness and body conditioning. 

PHED contributes to the society by disseminating research results; organize workshops seminars and conferences and joint venture sport events that contribute to the development of sport and health  culture.

The PHED is committed to achieving excellence in academics and research, and performing a community service at the highest moral and ethical level, which recognizes and responds to the rapid changes that characterize the local and global arenas.


Mission:

Work towards activating the strategic plan to improve the educational process and achieve excellence in all areas of physical education specialization. That can be accomplished in light of the scientific research and principles of the sport sciences in order to improve the level of health and sport achievement to meet the requirements of the modern society.


Department objectives:

  • To provide all students with theoretical knowledge, analytical and practical skills, and transferable sport skills to enable them to function effectively and efficiently in various sports environments at the level of undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
  • To produce graduates capable of performing scientific research and conduct individual and joint researches on issues related to sports, dynamic and health sciences that meet the needs of the local society.
  • To prepare leaders in supervising and administering sport sectors.
  • To enhance the Omani society's awareness and appreciation of the usefulness of sports and the necessity of physical activity in our modern life.
  • To promote partnerships with local and international authorities and institutions relevant to sports sciences. 

The PHED offers the Bachelor's degree program in Physical Education, which includes practical courses in team sports such as football, handball, volleyball and basketball, and individual sports such as athletics, swimming and gymnastics, theoretical courses such as Sports Organization Management, Sport Physiology, Descriptive & Function Anatomy, Sport Psychology, Movement Education, as well as elective courses such as Recreation in Physical Education and Physical Fitness for the Handicapped. The Department also offers university electives which aim to raise and enhance awareness of the importance of Sports’ culture, as well as to maintain and develop the physical condition of the students of Sultan Qaboos University. 

 

Bachelor's degree in Physical Education

This programme qualifies national cadres in physical education and sports sciences. The Department accepts General Diploma students who are eligible according to the admission system which provides equal opportunities to all applicants. 

 

To be enrolled in Physical Education major, a student must:

  • Get a minimum grade of 'C' in Basic Arabic Language, Basic English Language and School Sports.
  • Pass all medical, physical and skill tests.

 

Students enrolled in this program must complete (125) credit hours distributed as follows:

  • University requirements:         (12 credit hours)
  • Major requirements:                (107 credit hours)
  • Major electives:                      (6 credit hours)  

The department offers a range of courses. Below is a description of each course:

 

PHED1350 3cr. History of Physical Education and Sport. (3hrs.Lectures)

The course covers the historical development of physical education and sports in both Eastern and Western civilizations, ancient to modern eras. It explains the philosophical, educational and social development of the physical activity and sports as well as sheds a light on the Olympic movement and modern sport development in the Gulf region. The course also illustrates principles and ethical aspects of physical education and sport.


PHED2420 3cr. Principles of Kinesiology. (4hrs.Lectures)

This course focuses on the development of information and concepts historically related to kinesiology of human movement.  Skeletal, muscular, and neuronal considerations are observed for problem solving implication through the application of Newtonians laws and are manipulated by simple qualitative and quantitative approach based on the theoretical and practical level


PHED 3360 3cr. Sport Psychology (3hrs. Lecture)

This course deals with the sport psychology and its importance to physical education teachers and sport coaches, and focuses on psychological effects of sports and the relationship between personality characteristics and sport performance, as well as motivation and its relevance and impact on the adhering in or withdrawal from sport. The course also examines the psychological skills necessary for optimal sports performance: goal setting, imagery, concentration, self-confidence and relaxation techniques to manage stress and tension.


PHED 2370 3cr. Administration and Organization of Physical Education.  (3hrs.Lecture)

This course deals with the foundations and scientific principles for organizing and managing physical education and sport activities in terms of its historical development, functions and stages. It also highlights some models of international and local sporting governing bodies. In addition, it includes human resources management and explores managerial services associated with physical education and recreation sport.


PHED 3390 3cr. Motor Learning.  (3hrs.Lecture)

This course deals with the concept of motor learning, developmental phrases of motor skills in children and evaluation of their fundamental and manipulative motor abilities. Its study the parts of the movement, classification of psychomotor skills, and acquiring stages of motor skills.  The course examines the nervous system and its mechanism when acquiring motor skills, and deals with memory and information processing. It also deals with the applications of learning's and controls theories in acquiring and development of psychomotor skills (Associative, Cognitive, Contextual Interference, Open and Closed – Loop Control Systems … etc).   Finally, the course deals with kinds of feedback and its application in motor learning context.


PHED 1240 3cr. Sport’s Physiology.  (4hrs.Lecture)

This course aims to provide students with knowledge about the body organs function particularly musculoskeletal, respiratory, and cardiac and nervous systems during sport performance, analysis of the physiological changes that occur in the body: during exercise, after exercise, and during a recovering and understanding how to regulate the body temperature during exercise as well as understanding the phenomena of fatigue and recovery.


PHED 4250 3cr. Sport’s Injuries and First Aid.  (4hrs.Lecture)

This course aims to provide students with knowledge of mechanisms of injury, and recognition and treatment of common athletic injuries, understanding how to evaluate the common athletic injuries and the current methods of management and treatment of emergency injuries, basic understanding of life saving techniques relative to first aid and rehabilitation after injury.


PHED 3460 3cr. Sport’s Health.  (3hrs.Lecture)

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge of sports-related health, and highlights fitness and its importance in life and fitness components and its effects on public health, also addresses how to control weight through sports and proper diet. It discusse some of the issues such as exercise in hot weather, dietary supplements, women and sports and physical effort and its relation with the lack of movement diseases.


PHED 3550 3cr. Test and Measurement.  (3hrs. Lecture)

The course focuses on providing students with a range of scientific knowledge related to the concepts of tests and measurement in physical education, the purposes, features, terms and the qualities of a scientific tests and measurement in physical education. The course also provides student with the scientific transactions of tests including different types of physical, skills and motor movement tests. As well, this course focuses on the physical fitness tests and anthropometric measures, how to regulate physical tests and sports   selection.


PHED 1270 3cr. Descriptive and Functional Anatomy (3hrs.Lecture) 

The course provides students with the theoretical and practical knowledge related to  the study of the cell and its components  and the human body (muscular, skeletal, nervous, respiratory systems).


PHED 4510 3cr Principles of Training Science (3hrs.Lecture)

This course is designed to study the science of sports coaching in term of its concepts and training methodologies. It focuses on the training status, training principles and the methods of training and its applications. This course also studies the physical, skills and plan preparations.


PHED1230 3cr. Athletics 1 (6hrs.Lecture)

This course provides students with a range of scientific knowledge (practical and theoretical) regarding learning and teaching athletics. The course covers some athletics events such as 100m, 200 m and relay races such as 4x100m relay, and throwing events such as shot put and javelin, and jumping events such as long jump and high jump.


PHED 3230 3cr.  Athletics 2 (6hrs.Lecture)

This course provides students with a range of advanced scientific knowledge (practical and theoretical) regarding learning and teaching athletics. The course includes running events such as 110m hurdlers, and throwing events such as hummer, and jumping events such as triple jump.


PHED 1390 3cr. Swimming 1.  (4hrs.Lecture)

The course aims to provide students with a range of scientific knowledge, practical and theoretical instruction especially for the crawl and back strokes with the start and turning skills. Pedagogical instruction is of concern for beginners as well as the basic elements for evaluation. Using the modern equipment to link between the theoretical and practical swimming and its effects on the vital organs of the body and its relationship to life sciences and scientific movement and mechanics, as well as aims to develop the capacity of the student research, and the ability to apply rules of swimming.


PHED 2390 3cr. Swimming 2.  (4hrs.Lecture)

Provides students with a range of scientific knowledge practical and theoretical instruction for the breaststroke, the start and the turning skills. Various methods to save a drowning person, help fatigued swimmer, and get rid of Handles drowning. Pedagogical instruction is of concern for beginners as well as the basic elements for evaluation. Using the modern equipment to link between the theoretical and practical swimming instruction and rescue. The relationship to life sciences, scientific movement and mechanics, as well as aims to develop the capacity of the student research, and the ability to apply rules of swimming  will be included.


PHED 1220 3cr. Exercise & Gymnastics 1.  (6hrs.lecture)

The practical part of the course deals with major and minor positions of the posture and variety of free patterns of individual and dual physical exercises, Floor Exercises, Vaulting, and Pommel Horse. The theoretical part of the course concentrate in acquiring students with information regarding Exercises and Gymnastics such as historical background, divisions of exercises, and schools of exercises and Gymnastics. The course also deals with technical analysis of the comprised skills. Lastly, the course is a pre requisite of PHED 2590.


PHED 2590 3cr. Exercise & Gymnastics 2 (6hrs.Lecture)

The practical part of the course deals with a advanced selected patterns of exercises using exercises tools and Gymnastics’ equipment (Parallel bars, Rings, and Horizontal Bar). The theoretical part of the course deals with how to write the exercises by using symbols and signs. It also includes studying the techniques, and the ways of teaching Gymnastic exercises at schools. The course covers an introduction to official Gymnastics international rules.


PHED 1210 3cr. Gymnastics and Exercises 1.  (6hrs.Lecture)

This course covers a group of information, scientific and theoretical knowledge and ability to learn the physical (general/ specific) aspects to teach the basics of performance on instruments and devices. It also covers the importance of studying rhythmic exercises, gymnastics and performs all of these exercises on the different devices.


PHED2580 3cr. Gymnastics and Exercises 2.  (6hrs. Lecture)

This course acquires skills and knowledge related to the rhythmic exercises and gymnastics for students. It also acquires the ability to link between the practical and theoretical aspects such as Kinesiology, Physiological characteristics of the performance and improve the students’ innovative capabilities.


PHED 3670 3cr. Volleyball.  (6hrs.Lecture)

This course focuses on study all basic skills of volleyball, such as reception setup and defense. The course shows the teaching methods of all these skills and provides the students with all practical and theory knowledge of volleyball. This course also teaches the game rules and how to organize competitions according the law of the Volleyball international association.


PHED 3580 3cr. Basketball.  (6hrs.Lecture)

This course provides students with a range of theoretical and practical knowledge related to the basic individual, tactical offensive and defensive skills. It is also designed to identify methods of teaching the skills and plans to student in schools, learn the international rules of Basketball, as well as organize and manage Basketball games.


PHED 3660 3cr. Handball.  (6hrs. Lectures)

This course provides students with a range of theoretical and practical knowledge related to the basic individual, tactical offensive and defensive skills. It is also designed to identify the ways and methods of teaching these skills, materials and provisions of international law of Handball, as well as organizing and managing Handball games. 


PHED 3540 3cr. Football (6hrs.Lectures)

This course provides students with theoretical and practical knowledge regarding physical conditioning, tactic planning, and technique settings in football.  In addition, teaching students the football international law. The course aims to make students able to apply the theoretical knowledge in the field. It also aims to enhance their research skills, innovation, critical thinking, as well as motivation towards teaching football at schools and training centers.


PHED 2440 3cr. Racket and mini- games (6hrs.Lectures)

The course includes a series of scientific knowledge, practical and theoretical learning basic skills for each of table tennis, badminton.  Pedagogical instructions for the skills and international law tournaments, as well as provide with a variety of mini games and primaries, local games are included.  Such mini games will be implemented as an instructional support in PE at school.


PHED 3530 3cr. Dancing (F). (6hrs. Lectures)

This course provides students with range of practical and theoretical knowledge related to learning and teaching of Kinetic expression, which includes the development of a sense of kinetic music, teaching the basic skills of Ballet art and traditional dance. This course also help student to design dances for different backgrounds in the country.


PHED 2322 2cr. Managing Physical Activities (3hrs. Lectures)

The course provides students with concepts of leadership and human resources management in the field of sports. It teaches managerial skills such as planning, time management, project proposals and organize sport events. The course discusses professionalism and aspects of sport facility management. The course offers some practical implementation in managing sport activities.


PHED 4330 2cr. Recreation in Physical Education.  (2hrs. Lectures).

The course provides student with concepts and terminologies associated with recreation and leisure time. It identifies people goals, motives and needs for participating in sports and recreation activities. In addition, the course highlights types of recreation activities and leisure investment strategies as well as students acquire skills in designing and managing recreational programs for all age groups.


PHED 4260 2cr. Physical Education for Handicapped.  (3hrs. Lectures)

This course deals with disabled sports in terms of their competitions, technical analysis and their rules. The course also addresses the importance of sport for people with disabilities and health aspects of recreational and competitive. Students who finish this course are expected to be able to help people with people with disabilities in terms of the organizing and supervising of sports competitions.


PHED 1260 2cr. Health Education and Posture.  (2hrs. Lectures)

Concept of health education, physical activity and physical effort in terms of appearance and physiological and motor function will be addressed. Also, it strengthens the modern concepts of health education, physical activity and enhances awareness of the importance of exercise as prophylaxis and treatment of the likelihood of non-communicable and hypokinetic diseases. Avoidance strategy of behaviors, habits, and common misconceptions that negatively affect posture.


PHED 4370 2cr. Psychology of Sport’s Competitions. (3hrs. Lectures)

This course Seeks to provide the student with methods and techniques that achieve psychological care for athletes to ensure the best performance during competitions through controlling anxiety, arousal, and self talk. The course also deals with the positive and negative impact of competitions on athletes, the characteristics of the successful coaches, communication skills within training system, achieving cohesion of the team, and applications of psychological principles in lead to maximal performance.


PHED 2280 2cr. Physique’s education. (3hrs. Lectures)

The course is designed to provide students with the knowledge of healthy posture concept, recognizing the factors that contribute to posture deformation, recognizing common types of posture deformities and their causes and classifications. It also examines the relationship between posture and phenotypes.


PHED 2340 2cr. Scientific Research  Sport.  (2hrs. Lectures)

This course provides an overview of the fundamentals of research methods in Physical education and sport. It covers topics like scientific method;  research problems in sport discipline ; quantitative  and qualitative  research, the types of samples; health fitness standards,  proper selection of samples, methods of data collection. The course focuses on writing a research proposal and research report in physical education and sport.


PHED 4700 2cr. Athletics. (3hrs. Lectures)

The course provides students with practical applications of training principles, and helps student to develop and design training programs for enhancing physical fitness of Athletics events. It also identifies technology used in training as well as illustrates methods of talent identification. In addition, it provides students with competitions management skills according to international rules.


PHED 4701 2cr. Swimming. (3hrs. Lectures)

The course provides students with practical applications of training principles, and helps student to develop and design training programs for enhancing physical fitness of swimming. It also identifies technology used in training as well as illustrates methods of talent identification. In addition, it provides students with competitions management skills according to international rules.


PHED 4702 2cr. Basketball (3hrs. Lectures)

The course provides students with practical applications of training principles, and helps student to develop and design training programs for enhancing physical fitness of Basketball. PHED 4703 2cr. Racket Games (3hrs. Lectures)

The course provides students with practical applications of training principles, and helps student to develop and design training programs for enhancing physical fitness of Racket Games. It also identifies technology used in training as well as illustrates methods of talent identification. In addition, it provides students with competitions management skills according to international rules.

PHED 4707 2cr.  Gymnastics (3hrs. Lectures)

The course provides students with practical applications of training principles, and helps student to develop and design training programs for enhancing physical fitness of Gymnastics events. It also identifies technology used in training as well as illustrates methods of talent identification. In addition, it provides students with competitions management skills according to international rules.


PHED 1000 2cr.  Physical fitness (3hrs. Lectures)

The course deals with the concept of physical fitness, its history and its importance in the contemporary life. The course also explains physical fitness elements, their importance, and how could be developed (muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, speed, agility, and flexibility). It deals with the factors effecting body weight, and explaining how to control the weight through active and healthy life style including recommended physical activities. Lastly, the course describes and performs selected patterns of physical exercises with or without tools and equipments (Medicine Balls, Swedish Benches, and Wall Bars …etc).
